THELONICAPlays Duke Ellington **** The Unique **** „Plays Duke Ellington“ empfinde ich auch stärker, natürlich auch wegen Pettiford. Von der Stimmung (ruhige Momente) her gibt es kleine Parallelen zu der späteren „Solo Monk“ bzw. „Monk Alone“. Monk brauchte nicht immer ein Saxophon, finde ich. Hier beachte man auch die exzellente Songauswahl, die vermutlich von Monk alleine getroffen wurde. Insgesamt fällt mir seine Vielseitigkeit auf, vor allem wenn er nicht seine eigenen Kompositionen gebracht hat. Diese andere Seite von ihm sehe ich ganz stark gleichberechtigt zu den eher typischen oder bekannteren Werken von Monk (Genius of Modern Music/Brilliant Corners etc.).
Na ja, Monk und seine Spielweise sind für mich schon ziemlich stark mit seinen Kompositionen verbunden. Natürlich hat er sich gewisse Standards angeeignet oder besser, sie einverleibt (Lulu’s Back in Town ist einer davon, den ich ganz besonders mag, oder Sweet and Lovely und ganz super auch Smoke Gets in Your Eyes!).
THELONICAZu „Mulligan Meets Monk“: Die Kompositionen passen schon zu Mulligan, besonders „I Mean You“. Wegen dem Baritonsaxophon würde ich ihn eher nicht mit Tenoristen vergleichen. Natürlich stehen die Aufnahmen weit hinter denen mit Coltrane, die auch noch mit der selben Rhythmusgruppe entstanden sind (Ware/Wilson). Abgesehen von Rollins/Monk (?) waren die Quartette mit Coltrane, Griffin oder Rouse doch alle Working Bands, von daher ist der Unterschied schon sehr groß. Der Sound ist dann noch anders, weil er mit denen die vielen Clubgigs gespielt hat.
…. Aber ich bin auch generell der Ansicht, dass Monk spielen ohne Monk zu sein in fast allen Fällen nicht besonders gut geht. Mal Waldron ist da noch am ehesten die Ausnahme, und in Lacy hat er dazu einen guten Partner gefunden, der ja immerhin durch seine kurzen „stints“ mit Monk legitimiert ist. Und auch wenn Sphere eine ganz tolle Band ist… Kenny Barron und Monk? Never! .…
Sehe ich nur bedingt so, es gibt halt eher wenige „monkbefähigte“ Pianisten … aber dann schon zahlreiche Cover Versionen welche statt Epigonentum hörenswerte Sichtweisen anbieten …. auch von Kenny Barron ….

Mein Fazit hat sich da aber nicht grundlegend geändert, glaub ich. Ich hab in den kommenden Wochen (können auch Monate werden) vor, das eine oder andere Monk-Projekt wieder mal anzuhören. Generell empfinde ich halt fast alle Cover („fast“ schreib ich *nur* wegen Bud Powells „A Portrait of Thelonious“) als aufgeräumt, geglättet irgendwie. Die Monk’schen Zwischentöne und Voicings, die irren Läufe, der Stride-Beat – die Kombination davon (und vermutlich von mehr, woran ich jetzt nicht denke) macht für mich Monk aus, und das kann jemand wie Barron einfach nicht reproduzieren – will er vermutlich auch gar nicht, ist ja auch ok, aber halt einfach nichts, was ich dann unbedingt und regelmässig hören muss. Mir ist da vieles irgendwie zu nah dran und dann doch nicht nah genug, glaub ich (also: mehr Abgrenzung/Distanz könnte das Doppelgänger-Problem mit dem steten Ungenügen entschärfen).

Und dann noch die Frage nach Vinyl oder CD Ausgaben?

Lieber „kurganrs“, so wie „atom“ sagt die gewünschte Varante festlegen …. ich eigne die Mosaic Records Vinyl Ausgabe aus 1983, habe jedoch – da mich der frühe Monk nicht so berührt hat – nie digital „nachgezogen“ ….

Ich habe kein Problem mit Vinyl, genau so keins mit CD.
Da es mir schwer fällt mich festzulegen, frage ich zurück, @atom wenn Du Dich heute entscheiden müsstest, was würdest Du nehmen? @kurganrs Ich denke, dann ist die Abwägung die zwischen der 4-CD-Box von 1994 (da ist auch „Discovery!“ in der korrigierten Fassung – korrekte Geschwindigkeit/Tonhöhe – drin) und den klanglich ev. etwas besseren drei RVG-CDs (drei wegen der halben mit Milt Jackson – die ist Klasse, das Album kriegt bloss wegen der zweiten Hälfte – MJQ + Lou Donaldson – etwas Abzug). Ich hab die alte Box eh wegen „Discovery!“ behalten.

Wenn ich nochmal vor der Wahl stehen würde, dann würde ich meine LPs durch 10″ LPs der Japanischen Toshiba-Reihe ersetzen.
