Mit Malcolm Addey an Bord wird die Klangqualität so gut sein wie möglich. Mit Brian Priestley gilt wohl dasselbe für den Text im Booklet.
Aber es handelt sich überall um Live-Aufnahmen, die Mingus für sein eigenes kleines Label gemacht hat (Town Hall, Monterey, Favorite Quintet) und im Falle von Amsterdam wohl um einen Radio-Mitschnitt – heutigen Standards wird das nicht genügen, aber es wird gewiss so gut klingen wie nie zuvor.
Meine „Mingus at Monterey“ Do-LP und die Do-LP + LP aus Amsterdam (die wie gesagt anscheinend offiziell sind) klingen jedenfalls nicht besonders gut – aber die Musik, die ist fantastisch! Diese ganze Tour gehört für mich auf den Olymp, was Mingus, Dolphy, Byard und Richmond da anstellen, das ist kaum zu fassen, Clifford Jordan fügt sich ein und spielt selber klasse (aber gehört nicht zu denen, die die Grenzen aktiv pushen, scheint mir), Johnny Coles war ja leider nicht lange mit dabei, seine Stimme bringt einen lyrischen Gegenpol in die Band, in Amsterdam war er noch mit dabei, schon deswegen wird es toll sein, das Konzert in aufpolierter Form erneut zu kriegen! Wird jedenfalls eine schöne Ergänzung zu den 2CD-Sets aus Paris und Wuppertal.

Es fehlen allerdings neuere Releases (bei denen sich’s abgesehen von der Jazz Icon DVD allerdings eh nur um Boots handelt).Das sind ALLES fantastische Aufnahmen!
Zudem gibt’s noch Cornell 1964, das die Band etwas früher, vor der Europa-Tour, dokumentiert, und die erwähnte Jazz Icon DVD, auf der die Auftritte in Belgien, Norwegen und Schweden (auszugsweise) dokumentiert sind (12. April in Olso, 13. in Stockholm, und dann ohne Johnny Coles am 19. in Liège – wie das genau lief mit Paris und Liège am selben Tag, weiss ich nicht, hab die „Great Concert“ CD nicht zur Hand, um nachzuschauen, ob dazu was in den Liner Notes steht).
Abgesehen von diesem offiziell greifbaren Material, ist mir bisher untergekommen:

28. April – StuttgartDie liegen wohl – wie auch Amsterdam – inzwischen alle wieder auf neueren spanischen Bootlegs vor.
Ich müsste mal alle meine Festplatten durchforsten, um zu schauen, ob da auch noch mehr aus Oslo und Stockholm anzutreffen ist, auf der DVD sind ja leider nur Auszüge. In Marseille scheint ORTF mitgeschnitten zu haben, davon kenne ich bisher allerdings leider nichts.

Ja, das ist ein Fehler! Allein wegen „Faubus“!
„My Favorite Quintet“ scheint in dem Kontext einigermassen antiklimaktisch zu sein. Das ist ja bei „Monterey“ schon fast so, bis dann am Ende die grosse Band richtig grossartig auftrumpft. UCLA ist insgesamt zwar chaotischer, aber doch ein Stück besser als Monterey, finde ich. Wobei eben das abschliessende Stück auf Monterey zu den grossen Mingus-Momenten gehört.--

Es lohnt sich hier in jedem Fall auch für Vinyl-Anhänger, bei „Cornell“ und „Revenge!“ Ausnahmen zu machen!

„Revenge!“ ist kein Bootleg! Das war ein Label (es hiess passenderweise Revenge – die Rache an den Bootleggern), das Sue mit Joel Dorn gegründet hat, und das genau einen Release herausbrachte.

Dave Douglas ist da ein Fremdkörper, aber die anderen vier sind grossartig, jedenfalls zu schliessen von dem, was ich kenne!sehr gute Neuigkeiten! hänge ja jetzt schon mit den Boxen hinterher, aber zumindest Hemphill und Abrams kommen auf die langfristige Einkaufsliste… von der Douglas hab ich ein Album (Parallel Worlds), das ich auch ziemlich gut finde, auch wenn ich nicht weiß, ob ich drei Alben von der Band brauch – und die anderen drei Alben sind ja gar keine Douglas Alben (je ein John Lindberg (mit Larry Ochs, Douglas und (!) Ed Thipgen), Rova, Mark Dresser) – ist bestimmt kein schlechtes Set!

.Ich will Douglas nicht schlechtmachen – ich hab auch „Parallel Worlds“ und mag sie ganz gerne. Er ist bloss irgendwie in all den AACM-Sachen ein Fremdkörper.
Abrams und Hemphill sind für mich auch die ganz tollen News, Lewis knapp danach, bei Pullen/Adams bin ich nach wie vor etwas unsicher, bzw. habe mich wohl längst in der Unwissenheit, wieviel davon grosse Musik ist und wieviel Scharlatanerie (das geht eher auf Adams‘ denn auf Pullens Kappe), eingerichtet. George Lewis kenne ich noch ziemlich schlecht aber das Parker-Album ist toll (kriegt im Penguin sogar ein Krönchen).
