Die ersten beiden Drittel des Films waren die Coens at their best. Wie Fargo, nur irgendwie überhauptnicht so reißbrett akademisch und kalt. Tolle Leone und Peckinpah verweise. Das letzte drittel war dann verbockt. Wäre ja auch zu schön gewesen.

Allein die letzte Szene hat sich mir nach dem Abspann einige Tage eingebrannt. Ich war beeindruckt.

Hey man, why don't we make a tune... just playin' the melody, not play the solos...Für mich sind das alles Comic-Figuren, die auf einer hochästhetisierten Schaubühne uhrwerkartig ihre Schau abziehen. Trotz viel Schweiß, Blut und Dreck geht das ganze dann doch erstaunlich wenig unter die Haut und bleibt sehr sauber und ansehnlich.

Es gibt ganz wenige Szenen in Film und Literatur, in denen jemand von einem Traum erzählt, die mir nicht überflüssig vorkommen. Traumszenen gehören zu den bequemen erzählerischen Kniffen, die mir am wenigsten sympathisch sind, weil sie einfach immer irgendeine aufdringliche Symbolik transportieren und ohne jegliche Konsequenz für die Erzähllogik Behauptungen aufstellen können.
