A South Florida jazz treasure so often taken for granted, Ira Sullivan has been blowing great bop for the better part of six decades. The versatile Sullivan, who long ago eschewed the bright lights of big jazz cities for the relative calm of Florida, is equally adept on sax and trumpet, and his performances are always lively and unpredictable. Sullivan and his quintet are teaming up with a host of South Florida jazz stalwarts to benefit drummer Steve Bagby, who has been sidelined of late in a battle with cancer. Joining Sullivan in the lineup are Joe Donato, Duffy Jackson and Friends, the Mighty Professors of Bop, the Judy D. Quartet, and Nicole Yarling.

Besides listening to the music that I like, I’ve been exposed to a lot of other things. When I studied at college there was a guy named Steve Bagby, Jack De Johnette’s drummer. This was when Jack was a piano player, before he became a drummer himself, he was the most melodic drummer I’d ever seen live. Steve would do a jazz master drum class for seven drummers, we’d sit around each week and he’d have us play something and ask us what we were listening to. I’d mention the Clash, another one of my favourite drummers is Topper Headon, and he’d say that just because it’s jazz that doesn’t mean you have to play like a pussy. And he got on there and got into it. So that aggressiveness he would handle when it was needed. He showed me how to be emotive, how to get the things you need. That inspired me and the way I play.

Drummer Steve Bagby Dies at 66

University of Miami drum-set instructor Stephen Bagby died from cancer on June 27 at a Fort Lauderdale hospice. The 66-year-old had served on the faculty at UM for 30 years and performed and recorded with such jazz greats as Stan Getz, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Stitt and Chet Baker. Bagby also once performed with saxophonist John Coltrane in Chicago, sitting in for the regular drummer Elvin Jones.

Bagby was born in St. Louis and grew up in the Chicago suburbs, then toured extensively with the Red Rodney-Ira Sullivan Quintet before moving to Miami in the 1960s. He played numerous regular gigs in southern Florida, including those at two now-defunct venues, Bubba’s in Fort Lauderdale and the Rancher Motel Lounge in Miami. Bagby frequently played with Sullivan, whom he knew from his teenage years back in Chicago.

Bagby joined the UM faculty in the mid-1970s, and also led the house band for WLRN’s Flamingo Jazz Series at Hialeah Race Track in the 1980s. UM alum Rob Schuh said of his former teacher, “He always was the consummate artist. He never sold out, never cared about being famous or having endorsements.”

Bagby lived in Coral Gables. He is survived by his son Guy Logan, 35, a Los Angeles television producer, brother Benjamin Bagby of Paris, and sisters Barbara Davenport of Seattle and Emily Bagby of Rogers, Ark.

vielen dank, das ist in der tat alles sehr interessant. das duo mit diorio ist ja ziemlich frei, und interessanterweise konnten sie in den 90ern mühelos sowohl die bebop-tradition wie auch das freie spiel reaktivieren. was ja auch die überlegung nahelegt, dass von leuten, die zu einer bestimmten zeit stars auf ihren instrumenten waren, auch später erwartet wurde, in diesem stil weiterzumachen, während solche lokalgrößen wie diorio oder bagby quasi unbeobachtet ihre eigenen recherchen unternehmen konnten (attila zoller vielleicht als gegenbeispiel).
