thelonicaEin paar Interviews mit Ming Smith habe ich mir letztes Jahr angeschaut. Einige ihrer Arbeiten (auch ihre Art zu fotografieren) fand ich schon immer toll. Aber das Buch kommt irgendwie sehr spät finde ich. Die späte Anerkenung macht mich irgendwie traurig, umso mehr weil es um großartige Fotokunst geht. Und tolle Ausstellungen wird sie gehabt haben.

Aber sie erlebt zumindest diese Anerkennung …. sage dies ohne Ironie ….

Ja, das stimmt natürlich. Ich habe das zu pessimistisch gesehen, weil das insgesamt ja auch ein extrem schwieriges Jahr für eigentlich alle Künstler_innen ist. Sie hat ja dieses Jahr ihr Buch vorbereitet, die Presse bringt Artikel (Vanity Fair, Guardian etc) über sie und der Mann von Alicia Keys supportet sie ja wohl auch, genauso wie ihr Sohn. Ich hatte so ein bißchen Befürchtung, dass es schwierig werden könnte, weil jüngere Generationen von Künstlern vielleicht gar nicht richtig ihre Arbeiten kennengelernt haben und manches zu lange her ist. Vielleicht gelingt das jetzt mit dem Bildband. Sie hat ja auch ein breiteres Feld an Themen, es geht nicht nur um die Musikszene. Mir war das auch gar nicht so bewusst, hier im Interview nennt sie auch Gordon Parks u.a.. Gordon Parks hat auch Musiker fotografiert, diese Arbeiten sind nur nicht ganz so gut bekannt.

Zeit, Ort und Photograph (mir) unbekannt …. von der Körpersprache her wirkt es als ob sich MD in dieses Photo „hineingeschummelt“ hätte ….

Das ist leider nur ein Auszug in sehr bescheidener Qualität, aber vermutlich entstand das Foto auch damals?

There’s this most excellent footage floating around the ‘net of a John Lennon / Yoko Ono party from 1972 that features Andy Warhol, Phil Spector and Miles Davis. The 16mm color film was shot by filmmaker Jonas Mekas (the date was specifically October 9, 1972).

Great. Party footage. Looks like they had fun. Good for them. But what makes this unearthed party film so extra special is that it features Miles Davis and John Lennon shooting hoops.

Miles shows up around the 3:00 minute mark (with a very attractive female companion). The quick game of shoot-around starts around 5:00.

It’s so surreal, yet completely awesome. This is why YouTube is amazing. I just watched John Lennon and Miles Davis shooting hoops together.

John Lennon meeting Miles Davis during a Garden Party on June 12, 1971 at Allen Klein’s house. I am not sure what Davis and Lennon talked about, but video footage shows that they played a little game of one-on-one basketball (neither of them were very good) with John’s psychedelic Rolls in the background. A wide variety of people were at the party, including Andy Warhol, but Miles Davis was the person that John was photographed the most with that day.
