"Kunst ist schön, macht aber viel Arbeit" (K. Valentin)Es gab ja schon vor Michael Jackson einen Michael Jackson, Michael Gregory Jackson genau genommen. Und vor ein paar Wochen erschien auf Bandcamp (DL only) ein Mitschnitt aus dem Ladies Fort, dem Loft/Club von Joe Lee Wilson, 1977 mit Julius Hemphill, Abdul Wadud und Pheeroan akLaff aufgenommen. Kommt auf den Zettel für Freitag in einer Woche!
“Frequency Equilibrium Koan” is one of my personal documentations of that scene. These pieces were some of the many long form compositions that I was writing and performing at that time. F.E.K. was recorded live at the late great singer Joe Lee Wilson’s venue The Ladies Fort in 1977 on my trusty Sony field recording cassette machine. This recording is not without some sound issues, it’s a little bright here and there, there’s some breaking up, and a bit of gritty dirt/old tape saturation…a stamp of time passed, in music that is wholly present.

“Michael Gregory Jackson has long been one of my favorite musicians,” said Pat Metheny. “I always considered him one of the most significantly original guitars of our generation, with his own distinctive sound and point of view.”
Bill Frisell adds: “I first heard Michael Gregory Jackson in 1975 when I moved to Boston. He blew my mind and influenced me a lot. I believe he’s one of the unsung innovators.”
Frequency Equilibrium Koan is an authentic document of the without-a-net creativity and exhuberance of no-hold-barred this era. It is a performance of four lengthy compositions recorded by Jackson on his trusty Sony cassette machine in 1977 at The Ladies’ Fort. It finds the then 23-year-old guitarist leading a quartet featuring saxophonist Julius Hemphill, drummer Pheeroan akLaff and cellist Abdul Wadud.

Horace Tapscott & Michael Session Live in Avignon, France 1989
ich glaub das hatten wir hier noch nicht, tip von .org, erscheint am 25.9., ein neues Album von Horace Tapscott im Duett mit dem Saxophonisten Michael Session, einem Mitglied seines Arkestras… den Unterschied zwischen den beiden Vinyleditions hab ich nicht ganz kapiert (bis auf das Din A4 Blatt, dass der teureren beiliegt, die auch schon beinahe ausverkauft ist), was sie nach jetztigem Stand der Informationen gemein zu haben scheinen, ist, dass nur drei der sechs Tracks auf der LP Platz haben… weswegen ich mich wohl mit dem Download begnuegen werde…

After having released Don Cherry’s Cherry Jam as a limited Record Store Day title in the Autumn of 2020, Gearbox presents this essential release on specialist Japanese Edition vinyl and CD as well as digitally.
‘Cherry Jam’ sets the scene in 60s Copenhagen, a city which at the time proved instrumental in the hosting and development of jazz musicians both local and American. Cherry had performed and recorded there with Archie Shepp in 1963, toured with Albert Ayler in the autumn of 1964, and would go on to have a residency at the hip Cafe Montmartre in 1966.
Our recording is taken from the original tape of a 1965 radio broadcast, programmed by Denmark’s national radio station (Danmarks Radio.) It was in this same year that Cherry would record his landmark Blue Note recording, ‘Complete Communion’, with Leandro ‚Gato‘ Barbieri on tenor saxophone, Henry Grimes on double bass, and Edward Blackwell on drums, as well as feature on fellow American expatriate George Russell’s live album ‘George Russell Sextet at Beethoven Hall’. This particular line-up however, consisting of Danish musicians, has never been heard after its original broadcast date, and neither have the three original Don Cherry compositions that are featured on the recording credits.
These four pieces show Don Cherry in the midst of his transformation from pivotal sideman in New York’s avant-garde jazz scene to leader of his own groups and world traveller. His endless curiosity, free-thinking openness to different cultures, and rejection of musical boundaries paved the way for future creators in jazz, world music, and beyond.

Ja, sehe ich ähnlich. Drum hab ich das beim letzten Bandcamp-Friday auch nicht gekauft … und kommenden Freitag lasse ich es wohl auch bleiben, ist noch nicht entschieden. Für die physische Veröffentlichung hätte sich gewiss noch eine andere Session finden lassen.

danke, die version vom „some other spring“ ist ja wahnsinnig schön. brauch ich wohl. über sound und touch von flanagan denke ich ja auch schon lange nach, das ist wirklich schwer zu beschreiben. hank jones finde ich manchmal noch toller. aber dann gehen mir die vergleiche aus.

Ich glaub mich fasziniert Flanagan von den beiden eine Spur mehr. Barry Harris könnte man noch daneben stellen (ich hab übrigens die „Plays Tadd Dameron“ gerade doch auch noch erwischt @soulpope
), aber den höre ich irgendwie als etwas spröder? Ich habe die Flanagan-CD soeben bestellt … --

Einen Gruß in die Runde, ich war lange nicht hier.
Unbedingt wollte ich aber erwähnen, dass ich an Roberto Mirandas Album auf Dark Tree nicht herumkomme, nachdem ich auf bandcamp „Prayer #1“ hörte. Neben Miranda mit Bobby Bradford, John Carter, James Newton und Horace Tapscott, da fallen mir keine Argumente dagegen ein. Die CD ist bestellt.--

Six revelatory tracks by the late Japanese pianist Masabumi Kikuchi are featured on Hanamichi. Recorded over a two-day New York session on a magnificent Klavierhaus rebuilt Steinway, the music marks a divergence from the mostly free improvising Poo (Kikuchi’s nickname), who died at age 75 in 2015, practiced during his final years. Kikuchi’s radiant playing sparkles with melodic exploration and expression in renditions of lesser-known tunes and popular standards.
