Nicht wirklich. Hätte ich keine Liveversionen gelistet, wäre The Universal zwar ebenfalls auf Platz 2 bei mir gewesen, Parklife und Girls And Boys aber gar nicht drin und Beetlebum damit dann auf 20. Somit gleiches Endergebnis.

für diese überaus kenntnisreiche und detaillierte Auswertung. Für mich als Statistik-Freak bleibt keine Frage offen. Zweifellos ein Highlight des Jahres. Ich habe mit mich viel Vergnügen durch den Plattenkatalog gearbeitet.
Mit Beetlebum findet die Umfrage einen für mich doch etwas überraschenden Gewinner. Aber immerhin haben drei Teilnehmer den Track auf No. 1 gesehen und dann hat er in vielen weiteren Listen noch gut gepunktet. Insofern doch wieder nachvollziehbar. Für den Heini-Award ritze ich mir eine weitere Kerbe in meinen Colt.

Danke Gipetto für die tolle Durchführung und Auswertung! Endlich mal einen Grund gehabt, den B-Seiten, 13 und dem S/t-Album mehr Beachtung zu schenken.
Hätte ich mal „Black Book“ statt „The Universal“ auf 2 gehabt. Die 8:31-minütige Version natürlich. Dann hätte ich’s ja vielleicht auf den letzten Platz geschafft! Vorletzter. Wie undankbar. ;)

The song’s lyrics are something I haven’t quite grasped. As the songs seems to be fixating on this girl who seems kind of strange, sort of out there (“you’re always your way, you are”) but oddly attractive, I’ve come to think of it as a description of this lady being a bit of an airhead, or something of a free spirit. But I’ve also seen a few comments that really go for the dark side of things, judging by the line in the chorus where a ‘gaping hole’ in the head is mentioned and the “gun in your pocket” lyric. Supposedly, this narrator may have had their heart broken, commits suicide and literally shoots themselves, allowing the birds to feast on their brains. Two polar-opposite situations, here. Maybe this is a case that should be left unsolved.

We all know what Beetlebum is really about, but let’s put that aside for a second. Melodically this might be the best Blur song. The way the chorus hits—it’s like being lifted into some kind of dreamy haze, like the song is pulling you into a different space. The chord progression in that chorus almost feels like it’s got its own gravitational pull, slowly wrapping you in and making you feel like you’re floating. It’s catchy, yeah, but there’s also a rawness that gives it depth. I mean, the song is basically about heroin, but somehow it still feels beautiful in a strange, melancholic way.
What stands out in Beetlebum is how laid-back and groovy it feels. Graham Coxon’s guitar work here is understated but genius. His guitar tone has this grittiness that cuts through the smoothness of the verses, adding a rougher edge. You’ve seen the music video for sure. You probably remember Alex James, the bassist, casually smoking a cigarette like he’s not even part of a massive Britpop band. On the other hand, Dave Rowntree, the drummer, sipping Coke mid-song like it’s just another day in the office. The whole thing feels like this ironic contrast to the song’s darker undertones.
Musically, this track pulls from several influences—there’s a hint of The Beatles in there (that chorus feels very Lennon-esque), but it’s still undeniably Blur. It’s that mix of Britpop swagger and something a little more introspective that really made Beetlebum stand out back in 1997. Plus, Albarn’s vocals—he’s never been one to overdo it, and here he sounds almost resigned, which really works with the theme.
There’s something hypnotic about the pacing too. The song isn’t in a hurry to get anywhere; it just kind of sways, which is part of what makes it so addictive. You can easily get lost in it, especially when that chorus comes around again. It’s almost like you don’t even realize you’re hitting replay because it feels like a continuous loop.
When was the last time you listened to „Beetlebum“?. If you haven’t, give it a spin right now. It’s Blur at their peak, showing that they could do more than just catchy Britpop anthems. Hatte den Song nicht einmal in meiner Top 20. Allerdings aus Platzgründen; deshalb würde ich dem Autor nicht widersprechen wollen.

Die Moderation war nicht ganz einfach zu stemmen, da die Umfrage in eine totale Arbeitsspitze fiel und ich ausgerechnet während der beiden letzten Wochen des Verlaufs ganze sieben Werktage auf Dienstreise war. Viele Kommentare entstanden nach langen Tagen unterwegs im Hotel.
Trotzdem habe ich es genossen und mit Freude getan, denn durch die Umfrage konnte ich trotz langjährigem Fandaseins selber noch einmal viele neue Facetten an Blur entdecken und höre insbesondere auch das Spätwerk seither mit ganz anderen Ohren. Und im Eifer des Gefechts habe ich mir dann auch noch einen lang gehegten Wunsch erfüllt und in das 21-Boxset investiert… Die vier Jungs laufen hier trotz Umfrageende noch immer rauf und runter (meine Tochter setzt sich nur noch unter der Prämisse zu mir ins Auto, dass etwas anderes läuft als Albarn, Coxon, James und Rowntree).
