JAN AKKERMANN – The Complete Jan Akkerman (26 CDs)

Great news… a 26 CD Jan Akkerman set is being released in July. UK pricing is around £99 but one can easily find Dutch retail sites offering it for 80 Euro or less. Incredible value!

There’s one image available (above) but a lot of muddled or incomplete contents listings online, so I’ve figured out the content myself from the image and various partial listings. The problem is, I get 27 discs – so I’m guessing two of the shorter albums are combined on one CD. Anyway, I’m confident my list below gives the contents.

Wouter Jacobs, who compiled, annotated and and mastered the set in collaboration with Jan, kindly put some background info online elsewhere. Here’s what he said – which makes for exciting reading if you’re an Akkerfan like myself:

‘The booklet will be substantial, yes, to say the least. 66 pages. A biography by yours truly, with several pages of photos from all eras of Jan’s career – including several previously unpublished shots, followed by an album-to-album breakdown, featuring full credits (including never before published facts about who played what on particular albums) and Jan’s own memories about the 23 studio & live albums, taken from recent extended interviews I’ve done with Jan. In addition there’s a cd featuring his personal selection of Focus tracks, with some pre-Focus stuff added (Johnny and His Cellar Rockers, The Hunters and Brainbox) and a cd full of previously unreleased stuff. Such as basic tracks from “Angel Watch” and “Stingray” (both without string and woodwind overdubs!) and the original demo for “Crackers” recorded in the Summer of 1975 with Pierre van der Linden on drums. That particular demo was recorded during rehearsals for the 1975 Japan/Australia tour of Focus for which Pierre temporarily rejoined the band.

‘Regarding the mastering: I have been working for almost a year to transfer the analog 2-track tapes – or digital safety copies in some cases – for most of the albums up to 1993. Expect some flat transfers (as some were very good and did not need to be enhanced – less is more), expect some carefully dynamically remastering on some albums (eg. the 1977 guitar in bed album – which sounds pretty hollow and too bright – I have carefully corrected that), a few needle drops (as some mastertapes have disappeared and/or were untraceable) and for the rarities cd: a variety of sources, from 2-track DAT, cassettes to 2-track analog / 2-track digital.

‘Subsequently all cd-masters were checked and prepared for production by Peter Brussee of QPoint mastering in Hilversum (The Netherlands) – no additional EQ’ing a.o. was done during that final process.

LED ZEPPELIN – „The Song Remains The Same„ (Super Deluxe Boxset)

Am Anfang stand das Heben der Augenbraue, dann kam die Enttäuschung – im Detail:

Led Zeppelin‘s soundtrack to their concert film The Song Remains The Same has been remastered and will be reissued across multiple formats in September.

The band’s performances in July 1973, at New York’s Madison Square Garden, were recorded for the concert film, The Song Remains The Same. The soundtrack to the film, produced by Jimmy Page, was originally released in 1976.

This reissue is similar to the recent reissue of their live album How The West Was Won, since the formats on offer include an expansive super deluxe edition box set that includes the remastered audio on two CDs and four vinyl LPs and a two-DVD set of The Song Remains The Same featuring the full theatrical version of the film plus bonus content including four performance outtakes that were not part of the original film:  Celebration Day, Over The Hills And Far Away, Misty Mountain Hop, and The Ocean. The box also includes a DVD of the entire album in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and PCM Stereo, a download card of all stereo audio content at 96kHz/24 bit, a 28-page book (with photos and an essay by Cameron Crowe), a replica of the Japanese program from 1977, and a print of the original album cover (as usual, the first 30,000 will be individually numbered).

As well as the big box, there’s a 4LP vinyl set, a blu-ray audio with the 5.1 mix (96kHz/24 bit) and surround mixes and a humble remastered two-CD package.

It’s worth noting that for the 4-LP set, Page made a change to the track sequence, allowing the 29-minute version of Dazed And Confused to be featured in its entirety on one side of vinyl for the first time.

The Song Remains The Same will be reissued on 7 September 2018.

THE DOORS – „Waiting For The Sun“ (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

In September, Rhino will issue a 50th anniversary deluxe edition of The Doors‘ third album Waiting For The Sun.

The 1968 long-player features the band’s second US number one, Hello, I Love You (its B-side Love Street is the second track on Waiting For The Sun) and it reached the summit on the American album charts too, the only Doors album to achieve this feat.

This 50th anniversary reissue is a three-disc set – two CDs and a vinyl record – and features a newly remastered version of the stereo mix of the album (by Bruce Botnick) on both CD and the vinyl.

The second CD offers 14 previously unreleased tracks: Rough mixes of nine songs from the album, as well as five tracks performed live in Copenhagen in September 1968. Of the ‘recently discovered’ rough mixes Botnick has this to say: “I prefer some of these rough mixes to the finals, as they represent all of the elements and additional background vocals, different sensibilities on balances, and some intangible roughness, all of which are quite attractive and refreshing.” The bonus tracks on the 40th anniversary reissue haven’t been repeated here.

Audiophiles might be interested to know that the CDs in this new release have been encoded with the MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) process. These are fully compatible with standard CD players, but when connected to an MQA-enabled device, it can play the same disc back in hi-res 176 kHz /24 bit. I’ve never tried this myself – any good?

This Waiting For The Sun 50th anniversary reissue will be released on 14 September 2018.

PIXIES – „COME ON PILGRIM… IT’S SURFER ROSA„ (3-LP-Box / 3CD-Box)

Come On Pilgrim… It’s Surfer Rosa is available as a three-CD set in casebound hardcover book presentation (with lyric booklet) or a 3LP package, which includes GOLD coloured vinyl records housed in a wide-spined sleeve and a download card. Vaughan Oliver, the longtime Pixies designer, reinterprets his original artwork

Both of these are scheduled for release in September, but 4AD are offering a limited edition deluxe 3LP edition which is pressed on CLEAR vinyl and comes in a clothbound hardcover book and features a lyric book and art book. This will be released ‘later in 2018’ and can only be ordered direct from the band’s website. It’s around double the cost of the standard 3LP set.

GOLDEN EARING – Alive…Through The Years (11 CDs)

A limited 11CD box set from the Golden Earring called ‘Alive…through the years’. Together with Red Bullet the band collected 7 live albums, plus some unique recordings previously only available as b-sides. Also included are several recordings from the Five Zero Show from 2015, which were only available on DVD before.
 
The live albums are divided in 6 digipacks. The 7th CD is a bonus disc with live rarities. The box further contains a 32 page booklet with liner notes from Tjerk Lammers. In this booklet the various Live LPs are highlighted separately. And the existence of a band on-the-road come alive by various anecdotes as told by Tjerk, who also recently interviewed lead singer Barry Hay for this box set and who in 2015 published a book about the Golden Earring. The booklet is illustrated with beautiful photographs from the Vinkes brothers, who have been photographing the Golden Earring as early as the late 70’s.
 
‘Alive…Through the years’ is the successor of the Complete Studio Recordings box set which was released 2 years ago. And just like the latter this new live box set will also be released as a limited numbered edition.

THE KINKS – „The Village Green Preservation Society”  (Box Set)

The Kinks are going back to the Village Green – and it’s grown quite a bit in size!  On October 26, the band’s legendary fifth album, 1968’s The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society, will arrive from BMG Rights Management in a massive new box set produced by Andrew Sandoval.  The new box will boast 3 LPs, 5 CDs, 3 seven-inch singles and more, for a total of 174 tracks (3 previously unreleased songs, 55 previously unreleased versions).

Considered the band’s most enduring masterwork, Village Green gave full voice to Ray Davies’ uniquely English observational songwriting – poignant, funny, sad, and moving, yet always tuneful and well-crafted.  The box set is part of BMG’s new series The Art of the Album, focusing on lavish expansions of key albums from the label’s catalogue.  Indeed, this set will dwarf previous expanded editions of Village Green, most notably the 2004 deluxe edition which boasted 3 CDs and 62 tracks.

The new set includes the following:

LPs: Gatefold 2-LP set featuring original album (new stereo remaster and new mono remaster). Original artwork faithfully reproduced in high resolution. Plus: Reissue of the continental (Swedish) original, 12-track version of the LP which includes “Days”;

CD1: 2018 Stereo Remaster (remastered by Andrew Sandoval from original HD tape transfers) + bonus tracks including singles, B-sides & alternate mixes;

CD2: 2018 Mono Remaster (remastered by Andrew Sandoval from original HD tape transfers) + bonus tracks including singles, B-sides & alternate mixes;

CD3: Village Green Sessions – including alternate versions, mixes and backing tracks, many previously unreleased;

CD4: Village Green at the BBC – TV performance track audio and band interviews, many previously unreleased;

CD5: Preservation, Sessions, Live & Demos – including mid-’70s recordings, previously unreleased home demos, Ray Davies live in Denmark 2010 and unreleased track “Time Song”;

It’s all packaged in a rigid card box with a debossed cover, gold foil and metallic text, wrapped in special linen cloth finish.  The first 1,000 customers who pre-order from The Kinks’ official site will receive an additional, exclusive 7-inch single of “Time Song” (2018 Single Mix) and “Village Green” (Alternative Mix).

Ja, obwohl es mein zweitliebstes Kinks Album ist, brauche ich das alles irgendwie nicht. Mich würde auch eher Videomaterial aus der Zeit interessieren. Von den Kinks gibt es da m.E. viel zu wenig.

JETHRO TULL – „This Was“ (50th Anniversary Edition – 3CD+DVD)

Jethro Tull‘s 1968 debut album, This Was, will be reissued as a 3CD+DVD deluxe edition in November with stereo and surround mixes by Steven Wilson and rare recordings.

This 50th anniversary package includes the original album and bonus tracks remixed in stereo by Steven Wilson, live BBC sessions from 1968, the original mix of the album in both mono and stereo, a flat transfer of the US 1969 stereo mix and the original album and bonus tracks remixed by Steven Wilson in 4.1 DTS and AC3 Dolby Digital surround and 96/24 LPCM stereo (‘Love Story’ and ‘A Christmas Song’ are actually presented as 5.1 mixes).

The Jethro Tull reissues should be familiar by now, so this will be presented in the usual DVD-sized book package filled with an extensive history of the album, track-by-track annotations by Ian Anderson with rare and unseen photographs.

This Was: The 50th Anniversary Edition will be issued on 9 November 2018.

THE CRANBERRIES – „Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?„( 25th Anniversary Edition – 4CD box set / 2CD deluxe / Vinyl LP)

A 25th anniversary edition of The Cranberries‘ debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? will be released in October across a number of formats including a four-disc box set

This anniversary reissue was already in the works when Dolores O’Riordan died in January this year. After much soul searching, the band put out a statement saying “we thought about it and decided that as this is something that we started as a band, with Dolores, we should push ahead and finish it.”

The album was recorded in 1992 and produced by Stephen Street (who had worked on Blur’s Modern Life Is Rubbish in the same year). It was released in March 1993 and features the singles ‘Dreams’ and ‘Linger’; the latter a transatlantic top ten hit. The album topped the charts in both the UK and Ireland.

A ‘complete sessions’ reissue of Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? in 2002 added six bonus tracks, but this new 25th anniversary edition goes much further. The four disc box set contains the album on the first CD and bonus material spread over three further discs. Of course all of those previous bonus tracks are included, but so too are unreleased early demos, a live performance from 31 July 1994 at the Féile Festival in Ireland and a series of radio sessions from 1992-1993. The box includes a poster and four postcards.

There is a two-CD deluxe (disc two is repeated from the box) and a single CD and single vinyl LP edition (at the time of writing there are no links for the vinyl). Presumably, the audio is remastered, although no word as yet on the details.

Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? will be reissued on 19 October 2018. A new album from The Cranberries (for which Dolores had already recorded vocals) is expected in 2019.

Back in summer 1968, THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN were on top of the world. Famously promoted by performances with Arthur Brown wearing a burning helmet, ‘Fire!’ was a massive worldwide hit, topping the charts in the UK and Canada and eventually reaching the Top 10 in America (No. 2), France, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands and Ireland. The band’s second single on Track Records, co-produced by The Who’s Pete Townshend, it bridged the gap between London’s flourishing, colourful psychedelic underground and the mainstream pop scene.

The resulting album, THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN, was a theatrical, ambitious concept album based around the elements (fire being just one of four, of course). Such was the huge impact of ‘Fire’ that the album sold in huge quantities, peaking at No. 2 in the UK and No. 7 in America. The Beatles were the only other British band to enjoy such unprecedented sales with such ambitious, psychedelic LPs.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this landmark record, Cherry Red are delighted to present this deluxe edition box set of THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN. Alongside the stereo album and numerous bonus tracks, the rare Mono mix appears on CD for the first time, as well as three additional, previously unissued BBC sessions and four other radio recordings, plus a handful of pre-Track recordings by Arthur Brown before he formed Crazy World…
