Townes Van Zandt, dieser so bewegende, tragische, bewunderte und manchmal geradezu kultisch verehrte Songwriter, Sänger und Gitarrist aus Fort Worth/Texas hätte am gestrigen Samstag seinen 76. Geburtstag gefeiert.
Da ist es doch an der Zeit, eine Umfrage zu den besten 20 Songs dieses so großartigen Geschichtenerzählers und „Traurigliedersängers“ (Martin Wimmer) zu starten.Habe mich entschieden, die Umfrage als Umfrage nach den besten Songs und nicht den besten Tracks von Townes Van Zandt auszurichten.
Sein veröffentlichter Katalog ist ja sehr vielschichtig, alles andere als linear und teilweise verwirrend.
Etliche Songs sind in verschiedenen Versionen auf mehreren regulären Studioalben enthalten. Dazu kommen mit „Live at the Old Quarter, Houston, Texas“, „Rain on a Conga Drum“ und „Rear View Mirror“ mindestens drei herausragende Livealben; dazu noch mehr als eine Handvoll weiterer Livealben. Schließlich mit „The Nashville Sessions“ und „Sunshine Boy: The Unheard Studio Sessions & Demos 1971-1972“ noch Alben mit ehemals unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen bzw. Alternativversionen.
Selbstverständlich können und sollen dann in der Diskussion die einzelnen Studio- und Live-Versionen ausführlich gewürdigt werden.
Es sollen jedoch nur Songs gelistet werden, die von Townes Van Zandt geschrieben wurden, oder an deren Komposition er zumindest beteiligt war. Coverversionen von Songs anderer Songwriter – an denen es bei Townes Van Zandt an großartigen Beispielen nicht mangelt – sind daher bei dieser Umfrage ausgeschlossen.Spielregeln:
Gewünscht wird eine Liste mit Euren Top 20-Songs von Townes Van Zandt.
Abgabeschluß: 29. März 2020, 24 Uhr. Verlängert bis 30. März 2020, 20 Uhr.
Solltet Ihr eine einmal abgegebene Liste nochmal ändern wollen, ist das kein Problem. Ich bitte Euch jedoch darum, nicht den ursprünglichen Beitrag abzuändern, sondern die geänderte Liste in einen neuen Post mit vollständiger Zitierung der „alten“ Liste einzustellen.Auswertungsregeln:
Für Platz 1 gibt es 25 Punkte, für Platz 20 dann noch 6 Punkte.
Bei Punktgleichheit zählt die höhere Anzahl der Nennungen des jeweiligen Songs; sollte dann immer noch kein Sieger gefunden sein, gewinnt der Song, der die höhere Einzelplatzierung erzielt hat.Die Auswertung werde ich dann scheibchenweise ab 30. März starten.
Allerlei sinnvolle und weniger sinnvolle statistische Anmerkungen zur Umfrage wird es dann auch geben.
Und: selbstverständlich wird auch in den allseits beliebten Kategorien des „Konsensheinis“ und „Dissenzhorstes“ jeweils ein Sieger gekürt werden.Und nun bin ich sehr gespannt auf Eure Listen und die Diskussion.
Bei einem Künstler wie Townes Van Zandt sollten wir doch eine stattliche Anzahl von Top 20-Listen hier im Forum zusammenbekommen können.-

Coverversionen – wie das von Dir gelistete „Man Gave Name to All the Animals“, das von Bob Dylan geschrieben wurde (enthalten auf „Slow Train Coming“) – sollen daher nicht nominiert werden.

Einige Klassiker bei Dir vorne dabei, aber auch einige Songs – wie „Silver Ships of Andilar“, „Why She’s Acting this Way“ oder „Be Here to Love Me“ – die hier wohl eher selten in den Listen auftauchen werden.
Bei Deinen Fave Versions mag ich Dir zustimmen (besonders „Marie“ von „Documentary“ schnürt einem doch wirklich die Kehle zusammen), mit Ausnahme von „Waitin‘ Around to Die“, bei dem mir die Version auf „Townes Van Zandt“ mehr zusagt als die erste Aufnahme für „For the Sake of the Song“.
Wobei die Aufnahme für „For the Sake of the Song“ schon was hat mit ihrem Orchestra Score, der auch einer Lee Hazlewood-Aufnahme der Sixties entstammen könnte, und dem leichten Spaghetti Western-Feeling.--
