Barât’s £1m solo deal sounds death knell for The Libertines
By Adam Sherwin, Media ReporterTHE saga of the Libertines appeared to have concluded yesterday after co-founder Carl Barât signed a £1 million solo deal with the record company behind Emimem and U2.
Barât ejected his songwriting partner Pete Doherty from the award-winning Libertines after his former friend failed to address his heroin and crack cocaine abuse.
The door was held open for a cleaned-up Doherty to return but Barât has lost patience. Accepting that the Libertines are defunct without Doherty, he will now go it alone.
Barât has signed a long-term, worldwide recording deal with the Vertigo label, owned by the Universal Music Group. The Libertines recorded for the independent label Rough Trade but Universal promises to turn Barât into a global star alongside Scissor Sisters, Gwen Stefani and Keane.
Greg Castell, Vertigo’s managing director, said: “Carl is one of the greatest talents in modern music. His contribution to the Libertines was fundamental to the band’s success and we are delighted to have the opportunity of working closely with him.”
Although signed as a solo artist, Barât will form a band including other members of the Libertines but has no plans to include Doherty.
Music-watchers will be interested to see whether Doherty’s new band Babyshambles or his former partner emerges as the true songwriting talent from the acclaimed Libertines pairing. Barât’s career will be guided by Alan McGee, the record company mogul who discovered Oasis. Barât, who is recovering from an operation to remove a benign tumour, plans to release his first solo album in October.
Barât was the guitarist, vocalist and co-songwriter in the Libertines, who made their debut with the acclaimed Up the Bracket album in October 2002. The band’s second platinum-selling album, called The Libertines, was released last August.
Some Libertines fans painted Barât as the villain of the piece for sacking Doherty even though his flat was once burgled by the troubled musician.
But Barât thanked those fans who stayed loyal for their “objectivity” when accepting the Best British Band prize at the NME Awards last week.
In what now appears to be a farewell to the Libertines, he said: “My heart goes out to Pete. This is as much for him as for anyone, and obviously I hoped he would be here on the off chance that we’d have some kind of reunion. It means a hell of a lot to win because we’ve been through a hell of a lot this year.”

BABYSHAMBLES official return to the live arena tonight (February 22) proved to be a chaotic but ultimately successful affair.
After yesterday’s short warm-up gig passed without incident, tonight’s show at the London Carling Brixton Academy was subject to several hold-ups which saw the band unexpectedly leave the stage twice during their set.
Introduced by former Clash man and Libertines producer Mick Jones – who hinted that the band are about to start recording an album – the first interruption came three songs into the gig during Stix & Stones after the crush at the front of the venue became too great and the band left the stage in order to calm the crowd down. The second break however proved more controversial.
Doherty appeared to accidentally disconnect bandmate Patrick Walden’s guitar by treading on its lead midway through ’Gang Of Gin’ and although several members of the band’s crew rushed to rectify the problem, the guitarist’s frustrations boiled over and saw him swing a fist at Doherty.
The pair were quickly parted, but again Babyshambles left the stage for five minutes before restarting the gig with ‘Black Boy Lane’.
The duo appeared to have resolved their differences as the rest of the show passed without incident and ended with thunderous versions of ‚Albion’ and ‚Fuck Forever’.
As previously reported, Doherty who currently on bail after being charged with Robbery and Blackmail, had his curfew specially extended to midnight so he could play tonight’s show.

war or hands of time von den masters apprentices (dl hier: http://albionsolutions.net/main.htm -> downloads) klingt (fast) haargenau wie last post on the bugle… DAS hör ich auch ohne salzgebäck und bier. ;)

“Nach dem unrühmlichen und immer noch nicht endgültig geklärten Ende der Libertines hat Carl Barat die Zeit genutzt, um Zukunftspläne zu schmieden. Sein Solo-Debüt soll noch in diesem Jahr erscheinen.
Kollege und Drogenopfer Pete Doherty konzentrierte sich in den vergangenen Monaten neben seinen stetigen Eskapaden auf sein neues Projekt Babyshambles. Ganz anders ging Carl Barat ans Werk.
Nach einem kurzen Intermezzo mit dem Allstar-Projekt The Chavs suchte der Sänger und Gitarrist Ruhe – und fand sie in Wales.
„I’ve been going back and forth to Wales getting my head out of London.“ Und: „What I did in Wales was get back in tune with myself.“
Herausgekommen ist dabei neben einem kürzlich unterzeichneten Plattendeal bei ‚Vertigo‘ ein Haufen neuer Songs, den Barat in naher Zukunft aufnehmen will. Sein Solo-Debüt soll noch in diesem Jahr erscheinen. Passend dazu ist eine Tour geplant.

Arise now, ye Tarnished/Ye dead, who yet live/ The call of long-lost grace speaks to us allwales? das kann keinen guten einfluss auf seinen akzent gehabt haben! :o man versteht ihn doch ohnehin schon nicht. zumindest hab ich große mühe ihn zu verstehen. :o solo-album klingt aber gut. und tour auch.
