Diese Folk-Band aus London hat einen eigenen Thread verdient. Im Frühjahr letzten Jahres konnten sie mit ihrer ersten Single „Common Ground“ in Folk-Kreisen auf sich aufmerksam machen. Im Herbst erschien ihr erstes Album „From Here“, das die hohen Erwartungen erfüllen konnte. Ein Jahr später ist jetzt ihre zweite Single „Tales From St Judes, Bethnal Green“ auf ihrem eigenen Label erschienen.
Momentan touren sie im UK, geplant sind Gigs auch bei uns. Für 2017 ist die Veröffentlichung des zweiten Albums geplant.

@midnight mover: Da hattest Du mich bereits Anfang dieses Jahres mit Deinem 2015-LP-Ranking positiv überrascht.
@WD: Das wäre klasse! Ich rechne fest mit einem Einsatz der neuen Single in den nächsten Wochen Sonntagabend. Die Band hat sich übrigens erfreut gewundert, als vor einer Woche recht viele Bestellungen aus Deutschland eintrafen.

POPKIDS OF THE WORLD UNITE!
Am 17.03.2017 erscheint das zweite Album. Über Bandcamp sind Vorbestellungen bereits möglich.
„We set out to make a collection of live recordings – a snapshot of English folk music right now. We wanted to capture performances that were immediate and intimate. You feel like you’re in the room with them, hearing a continuation of a tradition which is very much alive, and evolving.
We didn’t know most of these people, being new to the folk scene. But we could see across the breadth of England, what a wide range of music and styles there were. When we approached the artists, most of them said yes without question, and trusted us with their art. We were welcomed into private and personal spaces, in down-time, and between gigs. Often we were done within the hour, then packed away in the boot of the car, and on to the next one. Of course there are people we don’t know about, or couldn’t get…There is always next time.
From a stone cottage in Edale, a London bank vault, a Bristol back room, to a Robin’s Hood Bay garden at dusk, a Bedford kitchen, each artist was asked to think about what From Here meant to them – by way of place or geography, as a way of looking back to musical origins, or simply where they are at this very moment in time – ‚here’s what I am, this is where I’m from‘. Then we just recorded them live, in situ, two stereo mics, no overdubs. Exactly as if you were right there.“

Keith Richards 19662018 gab es ein hervorragendes Album, eine feine Single und ein okayes Mixtape (letzteres nur CD/DL); das neue Jahr bringt zunächst einmal, am 19. April, die zweite Folge ihrer English Folk Field Recordings Anthologie: Stick In The Wheel waren wieder bei diversen Folk-Musikern zu Besuch, „capturing immediate, intimate performances“. Den ersten Teil fand ich zwar nicht großartig, aber doch gut genug, um auch an dieser zweiten Sammlung interessiert zu sein.

To Hell with PovertyStick In The Wheel sind in der jüngsten Folge des Folk on Foot-Podcasts zu hören (Konzept: „Matthew Bannister goes walking with a leading folk musician in a landscape that has inspired them. They sing and play exclusive acoustic songs on location.“)
Inhaltsangabe: „The band’s founders Nicola Kearey and Ian Carter take Matthew Bannister for a walk through their East London stomping grounds, starting in a Victorian weaver’s house in Spitalfields, taking in Walthamstow Market and ending up in Epping Forest where they’re joined by fiddle player Ellie Wilson. Along the way they sing songs that reflect the chequered history of the East End of London and it’s more recent past.“ In Spitalfields hören wir „Four Loom Weaver“ und „Weaving Song“, in Walthamstow (im Rose and Crown, wo Stick In The Wheel ihre ersten Auftritte hatten) gibt es „Up to the Rigs of London Town“ und „Me ’n‘ Becky“ und im Epping Forest schließlich bieten sie „All the Things“ dar. Dazwischen unterhalten sie sich mit Matthew Bannister über die Bandgeschichte, die Lokalgeschichte, die Songs und die Umgebung.
