Favoriten sind jedenfalls die beiden 1975er Alben von Von Freeman, „Have No Fear“ und „Serenade and Blues“, Charles Tylers „Saga of the Outlaws“ und Warne Marshs „All Music“. Von den freieren Sachen mag ich die frühen Art Ensemble Sessions sehr gerne (habe die Box, die neuen Reissues sind neu gemastert, Upgrade könnte sich lohnen).
Die Alben von Leo Smith und v.a. Roscoe Mitchell kenne ich noch zu schlecht, um mich dazu zu äussern, aber die Musik von Mitchell ist jenseits jeglicher Komfortzonen und schon deswegen bemerkenswert, sie fordert und sie belohnt auch.
Letzlich ist wohl jede Veröffentlichung lohnenswert – der Katalog ist schmal und sehr bewusst gewachsten.
Die beiden EMI Art Ensemble Alben sind übrigens in der Reihe „Americans Swinging in Paris“ auf der CD „The Pathé Sessions“ neu aufgelegt worden, die Alben von Webster und Thompson sind bei Ensayo greifbar.
Die neuste Veröffentlichung ist „Vonski Speaks“, der Mitschnitt von Von Freemans tollem Konzert am Jazzfest Berlin 2002 (mit dem New Apartment Lounge Quartet: VF-ts, Mike Allemana-g, Jack Zara-b, Michael Raynor-d). Auch das eine äusserst lohnenswerte Anschaffung. Kommt allerdings nicht an die 1975er Alben heran – aber das sind auch die beiden allerbesten von Von Freeman, soweit ich das beurteilen kann!

so little is fun„Air Time“ ist super! Möglicherweise das beste Air-Album (bin mir aber nicht sicher, ob ich schon alle gehört habe – jedenfalls besser als all jene auf Soul Note, die ich kürzlich in der Threadgill-Box wiedergehört habe).
Ich glaub die Alben, von denen ich bisher *ein wenig* enttäuscht war ist das NRG/Hal Russell (ich liebe die „Hal Russell Story“ und auch „Finnish/Swiss Tour“ und „Hal’s Bells“ gefallen mir sehr gut) und das Album von Fred Anderson.

Anfang Woche habe ich die drei anderen Roscoe Mitchell CDs gehört – besonders „Nonaah“ ist unglaublich eindrücklich! Es beginnt mit einem Solo-Konzert aus Willisau von 1976, das unter widrigen Umständen stattfand: eigentlich war Anthony Braxton für ein Solo-Konzert geplant, Mitchell war nur noch dort als Gast und Hörer, nachdem das Art Ensemble in den Tagen zuvor aufgetreten war. Weil Braxton nicht rechtzeitig ankam, bat Troxler Mitchell darum, einzuspringen, dieser hatte gerade noch eine Stunde Zeit sein Altsax aufzuwärmen und sich vorzubereiten… Troxler macht eine Ansage (Schwyzerdütsch, versteht sich), das Publikum ist unruhig, enttäuscht, äusserst gereizt, Mitchell beginnt mitten in Troxlers Ansage hinein die lange Solo-Version von „Nonaah“ zu spielen, für die ersten mehreren Minuten repetiert er fast nur ein Motiv, das Publikum ist dauernd zu hören, Mitchell kämpft gegen es an… in den damaligen (1977) Liner Notes wird er zitiert, dass er dem Publikum klarmachen musste, dass er nicht gehen würde – wenn jemand gehen würde, dann das Publikum, er stand da und setzte sich langsam durch…. das ganze wird immer intensiver, mit der Zeit beruhigt sich dann das Publikum ein wenig. Das nackte Saxophon Mitchells in seiner rohen Emotionalität ist enorm eindrücklich und stark, nach dem ersten Drittel oder so öffnet es sich, Mitchell spielt „slurs“ und und fängt an, Klänge zu erforschen… Es folgt Joseph Jarmans wunderbares Stück „Ericka“ und dann als kurze Zugabe nochmal mit „Nonaah“. Danach sind ein paar Stücke aus Studio-Sessions aus Chicago zu hören: je ein Duo mit Braxton und Malachi Favors sowie ein Trio mit George Lewis und Muhal Richard Abrams (dieses Trio war in den letzten Jahren ja auf dem europäischen Festival-Zirkus wieder sehr aktiv). Dann folgt die zweite lange Version von „Nonaah“, diesmal ein Quartett aus Altsaxophonen (Mitchell, Jarman, Henry Threadgill und Wallace McMillan) – eine weitere grossartige Exploration!
Zum Ende des originalen Albums folgt eine weitere Solo-Aufnahme aus den USA, im Januar 1977 in Berkeley aufgenommen. Die Doppel-CD enthält dann am Ende der zweiten CD zusätzliche Stücke von den Chicago-Aufnahmen und dem Berkeley Solo-Konzert.Nonaah is about as direct as one can get and, lest one forget, the music of Mitchell, Abrams, Jarman, Braxton and their cohorts is rebellious to this day.

Ja, das hab ich nicht erwähnt: eine Email mit Versandbestätigung hab ich auch nie gekriegt.
Die CDs waren immer sehr schnell da (1 Woche bis 10 Tage).--

In the three decades between then and the making of this album, he recorded sparsely – once more under his own name for Delmark, with appearances on only a few other discs. Until his health betrayed him, he played regularly with the group on this recording, in a style that carried an authentic blast from the past. He was among the last exemplars of the swing tenor sound, in which every note carries its own inflection, each phrase a distinct imagery, the whole solo rippling and cresting with the limitless nuance of human speech. For this recording Eddie assembled a stellar group of Chicago veterans; Paul Serrano – trumpet, John Young – piano, Eddie de Haas – bass and George Hughes – drums.

Never released before! Before There Was „Sound“, the landmark debut album for Chicago’s AACM recorded by Roscoe Mitchell for Delmark in the fall of 1966, there was a changing roster of Mitchell ensembles. The Mitchell Quartet recorded the present sessions approximately a year before „Sound“ – no one remembers the exact date, only that it was probably late summer – early fall. Whatever the exact date, this album presents the earliest recordings available of the work of the AACM, probably taped shortly after the first meeting of the organization in May 1965. Members of the quartet include Fred Berry – trumpet, Malachi Favors – bass and Alvin Fielder – drums. Compositions include 5 Mitchell originals and one each by Berry and Favors.

Earl Lavon Freeman, recipient of the NEA Jazz Master award for 2012, recorded this music during a marathon session in 1975. That amazing session also yielded the date called „Serenade & Blues“. Von told historian Terry Martin „Now the thing we did with Chuck to me was a miracle because he just let me do it my way and I have never been in the studio and seen a man so relaxed…and I’m generally a very relaxed man. I must have been the most nervous man in there.“ This reissue adds „Boomerang“, a Freeman composition to the original LP release.

Von „Have No Fear“ habe ich die japanische Lizenz-Ausgabe von 1997 (CD auf dem Label Bomba Records – der Bonustrack ist dort auch schon enthalten) – ein grossartiges Album und zusammen mit „Serenade and Blues“ meiner Ansicht nach der Höhepunkt von Von Freemans offizieller Diskographie.
Auf die frühe Session von Mitchell bin ich sehr gespannt! Ein paar kurze Fragmente, die auf Dime landeten, haben den Release fast verhindert und vermutlich einige Jahre verzögert… und ich freue mich enorm, dass die Aufnahme jetzt doch noch erscheint!--

Unklar ist mir, ob’s „Procession of the Great Ancestry“ ursprünglich mal als LP gab oder ob das der erste CD-Release war (1983 scheint mir allerdings etwas früh für ein so kleines Indie-Label), muss mal bei Chuck nachfragen.
Was mit ncd-29 ist weiss ich ebenfalls nicht… kommt vielleicht ja noch, es bleiben noch ein paar Titel, von denen es bisher keine Reissues gab. Und vielleicht gibt’s ja auch mal wieder was neues (wie Braxton/McDonough) oder was archivalisches (wie „Vonski Speaks“).
