gypsy-tail-windWenn ich Evans mit Mähne (und Bart) sehe, werde ich immer gleich etwas depressiv … Der „heutige“ Cowboy ist aber auch schon älter geworden seit dem Foto, oder?

evans‘ zuhause scheint schon zu lebzeiten ein evans-museum gewesen zu sein. dejohnette als biker ist wahrscheinlich von mitte 90er (vielleicht auch später, er hat zwischendurch mal haare gefärbt).

Bin ja gerade an einer Sendung über Fred Hersch … und da lese ich wieder mal das Interview von Ethan Iverson, und darin diese deprimierende Passage:

EI: What was seeing Bill Evans like?

FH: Well, he played a concert in Cincinnati when I was still living there, I don’t remember where, and I remember it being very formal. And then I heard later in some interview with him, and I’m not sure if this is true or not, but he said that night to night, about 85% of what I do is the same, and there is the 15% wiggle room. In theory, that may have been what killed him, you know. How many times can you play “Waltz for Debby” or “My Romance,” I mean… and get off on it? That’s probably where the drugs came in…

Unter diesem Aspekt hätten gar nicht so wenige Musiker zu Drogen greifen müssen ….

Taten (und tun) sie ja auch.

Hersch beschreibt da auch eine gute Szene. Er nahm mal eins der Konzerte mit Joe Henderson auf. Sein Job als Rookie war es immer, für Stoff zu sorgen (in seinem Fall Marihuana), aber dann kam seine „connection“ nicht, das erste Set spielte er also nüchtern, in der Pause kam der Stoff, beim zweiten Set dachte er „whoah, jetzt spielen wir grossartig“ – ein paar Wochen hörte er die Aufnahme an und merkte: es war exakt umgekehrt, das erste Set entspannt und locker, das zweite gewollt und verkrampft. Und seither (das Interview ist wohl von 2015?) hätte er nie mehr was konsumiert vor Auftritten, nicht mal ein Glas.
