BOB DYLAN TURNED THE rock world on its ear when he converted to born-again Christianity in 1979 and starting performing concerts of nothing but gospel material, mostly his own. The release of 1979’s Slow Train Coming and 1980’s Saved documents this spiritual rebirth and still stand as one of the most unusual and compelling chapters in Dylan’s fascinating career.

Although the dose of religion was a bit too strong back then for most fans, especially on Saved, many Dylan historians now view that period favorably, citing Dylan’s intense commitment to the material and, indeed, the quality of the material itself.

It’s with this in mind that producer Jeffrey Gaskin put together Gotta Serve Somebody: A Gospel Tribute to Bob Dylan, which Columbia/
Legacy releases on March 25. In addition to various gospel acts covering Dylan’s pious material, Gaskin received the blessing of the master himself: Dylan re-recorded one of his songs from Slow Train, „Gonna Change My Way of Thinking,“ with Mavis Staples, just for this release.

The complete track listing: „Gotta Serve Somebody“ by Shirley Caesar, „When You Gonna Wake Up“ by Lee Williams & the Spiritual QC’s, „I Believe in You“ by Dottie Peoples, „Are You Ready?“ by the Fairfield Four, „Solid Rock“ by the Sounds of Blackness, „Saving Grace“ by Aaron Neville, „What Can I Do for You?“ by Helen Baylor, „In the Garden“ by the Broadway Inspirational Voices, „Pressing On“ by the Chicago Mass Choir, „Saved“ by the Mighty Clouds of Joy, „When He Returns“ by Rance Allen, and „Gonna Change My Way of Thinking“ by Dylan and Mavis Staples.
