Der Ursprungspost des Fadens:
Eines der ersten Jazz-Trios wurde im Jahr 1939 von Nat King Cole gegründet. Es bestand aus Bass, Gitarre und Piano und ist von seinem Charakter und der Emanzipation vom Orchester fast schon mit einem Barocken Trio vergleichbar. Anfangs bildete das Klavier das Haupt- und stimmgebende Instrument und wurde erst im Laufe der Zeit, spätestens mit Bill Evans auf eine gleichberechtigte Stufe mit der Rhythmusgruppe gestellt. Das Pianotrio ist in meinen Augen das Kernstück des Jazz und wird zur idealen Formation, wenn drei Einzelstimmen zu einer Einheit verschmelzen.
Nat King Cole war einer der ersten, die das Piano-Trio als eigenständige Formation im Jazz einsetzte. Mit Nat King Cole am Klavier, Oscar Moore an der Gitarre und Wesley Prince am Bass war das Nat King Cole Trio in den 40er Jahren der Ausgangspunkt eines jeden Piano-Trios und stand als Vorbild für viele nachfolgende Trios und erweiterte Jazz-Combos. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte es noch keinen strukturierten Wechsel von Solo- und Begleitparts der drei Instrumente gegeben. Mit seinem Einstieg bei Capitol Records leitete er die wichtigste Phase des Trios ein. Zu hören sind diese Aufnahmen beispielsweise auf „The Complete Capitol Trio Recordings“, die bei Mosaic erschienen sind.
Art Tatum gründete in den vierziger Jahren mit dem Bassisten Slam Stewart und dem Gitarristen Tiny Grimes ein Piano-Trio in Colescher Tradition. Dieses Trio nahm im Laufe der Zeit eine Handvoll 78s auf, die auch heute noch zu den großartigsten Momenten im Piano-Trio-Jazz gehören. Auch in den 50er Jahren gehören Tatums selten gewordenen Trio-Einspielungen zur erstklassigsten Trio-Musik. Seine Einspielungen mit Red Callender und Jo Jones findet man unter anderem in seiner „Group Masterpieces“ Reihe.
Bud Powell spielte bereits auf seiner ersten Leader-Session in einer Piano-Trio Formation mit Curly Russell und Max Roach und nahm 1947 einige Titel auf. Die wesentlich legendäreren Aufnahmen dieses Trios entstanden allerdings ein paar Jahre später während Powells zweiter Session für Blue Note. Zu hören sind die Titel auf der Blue Note Kopplung „The Amazing Bud Powell“.
Oscar Peterson spielte seit 1945 und besonders nach 1949 in wechselnden Trio-Besetzungen, bevorzugt in der klassischen Nat King Cole Besetzung, seltener in der neueren Piano-Bass-Schlagzeug Formation.
Horace Silver nahm zwischen 1952 und 1953 drei ausgezeichnete Sessions mit eigenem Trio auf, die in der Besetzung Art Blakey am Schlagzeug und Gene Ramey, Curly Russell oder Percy Heath am Bass entstanden sind.
Erroll Garner ersetzte für sein Trio den Part des Gitarristen durch einen Schlagzeuger und spielte in dieser Formation einige Platten ein. Besonders der Livemitschnitt für „Concert by the Sea“ mit dem Bassisten Eddie Calhoun und dem Drummer Denzil Best gehört zu den essenziellsten Alben des Genres.
Bill Evans hat das Pianotrio in den Jahren 1956 bis 1958 zu neuen Ufern geführt und hat es spätestens 1961 zur subtilsten aller Jazzformation entwickelt. Seine Trio-Einspielungen mit Scott La Faro und Paul Motian gehören zum Kernstück des gleichberechtigten Piano-Trios.
Red Garland gründete 1958 nach seinem ersten Ausstieg aus dem Miles Davis Quintet sein eigenes Trio und spielte mit Paul Chambers und Art Taylor einige tolle Platten ein. Seine Einflüsse von Tatum, Powell und Cole und seine Nähe zu Ahmad Jamal und Erroll Garner lassen das Material zwar nicht zu den individuellsten Piano-Trio Einspielungen gehören aber durchaus zu den hörenswertesten.
Duke Ellington hatte zwar schon einige wunderbare Titel in Triobesetzungen eingespielt, doch gehört für mich sein Trio mit Charles Mingus und Max Roach zu den ganz großen Glücksmomenten im Jazz. Drei Individuen, die im September 1962 eine radikale Neudeutung des Piano-Trios vornehmen, die kaum mehr etwas mit der Triomusik eines Bill Evans gemein hat.

Hinzuzufügen ist vielleicht noch, dass sich das Piano-Trio gerade bei den Neo-Konservativen der letzten Jahrzehnte einiger Beliebtheit erfreut, zB Jacky Terrasson, Benny Green, Gonzalo Rubalcaba oder Brad Mehldau.
Auf keinen Fall fehlen darf mE das Jarrett -Trio mit Peacock und DeJohnette. Besser können drei Musiker eigentlich nicht zusammenspielen.

Hab auch zuerst das Jarrett „Standart“ Trio vermißt. Aber das ist auch ein ganz anderer Zeitraum.
Diese Blue Note Aufnahmen sind schon erste Sahne, Ah Um.--

Der Output des Jarrett-Trios ist ja doch recht umfangreich, den kenne ich nicht komplett. Es gibt halt auch noch sehr viel anderes Interessantes.

Duke Ellington hatte zwar schon einige wunderbare Titel in Triobesetzungen eingespielt, doch gehört für mich sein Trio mit Charles Mingus und Max Roach zu den ganz großen Glücksmomenten im Jazz. Drei Individuen, die im September 1962 eine radikale Neudeutung des Piano-Trios vornehmen, die kaum mehr etwas mit der Triomusik eines Bill Evans gemein hat.Sehr interessant! Könntest Du hierzi ein, zwei Aufnahmen nennen?

Bill Evans hat das Pianotrio in den Jahren 1956 bis 1958 zu neuen Ufern geführt und hat es spätestens 1961 zur subtilsten aller Jazzformation entwickelt. Seine Trio-Einspielungen mit Scott La Faro und Paul Motian gehören zum Kernstück des gleichberechtigten Piano-Trios.Ebenfalls sehr schön: „The Paris Concert“ von 1979 mit Marc Johnson und Joe LaBarbera. Besteht aus zwei Discs, wobei es mir besonders die zweite (auf der hauptsächlich Evans eigene Kompositionen enthalten sind) angetan hat.
