Und wo sind die Sideman-Sessions?!In meinem Miles Sterne-Post… und irgendwie hab ich das Gefühl, dass ich das Album mit Cannonball auch schon mal besternt habe (***1/2 oder ganz knapp ****, Portrait hab ich ewig nicht mehr gehört, ***?). Was sonst noch? … ah ja, George Russell.

Beim Kai & J.J. Impulse-Albumm, „Nirvana“ und Golsons „Just Jazz“ war ich mal eher zurückhaltend, hingegen bei Pike, Dameron, Konitz und Scott eher grosszügig.--

Ich kenne mittlerweile davon vielleicht sieben und werde auch diese der Reihe nach anfügen.--

„Portrait of Jazz“ wird noch folgen, sowie so manches Sideman-Date.
Keinen Zugriff habe ich derzeit auf „How my heart sings“, „Everybody digs..“ und die beiden Paris-Concert-CDs.--
"There is a wealth of musical richness in the air if we will only pay attention." Grachan Moncur IIIVor kurzem bin ich auf „Quintessence“ gestoßen, eine ganz wunderbare Einspielung von 1977 mit Ray Brown (b) und Philly Joe Jones (d) in der Rhythmusgruppe und Harold Land (ts) sowie Kenny Burrell (g) in der Frontline. Von der Besetzung her könnte das Album auch über 10 Jahre früher entstanden sein. Brown’s fetter Bass wärmt die Musik ziemlich, wenngleich sein Bassspiel nicht so komplex wie das von LaFaro oder auch Israels erscheint. Land und Burrell tragen die melancholische, entspannte Grundstimmung des Albums durchweg und Evans spielt ebenso wie auf „Loos Blues“ (aka die Zoot Sims-Session) lyrisch und wie auf seinen Trio-Aufnahmen. Leider finden sich keine Eigenkompositionen von Evans, so dass „Quintessence“ weniger kopflastig und modern-auskomponiert klingt, manchmal vielleicht ein bißchen „cheesy“. Dennoch, sehr gute Scheibe und wieder eine wertvolle Ergänzung zu den Trio-Aufnahmen.

Hey man, why don't we make a tune... just playin' the melody, not play the solos...Danke – toll! Hab ich bisher nie geschafft, das halbwegs am Stück (oder in mehreren grossen Portionen) zu hören. Was ich im Ohr habe, kann ich allesamt nachvollziehen … da und dort einen halben mehr („California, Here I Come“, „Portrait in Jazz“ – meine erste Begegnung) oder weniger, aber im grossen ganzen passt das glaub ich auch für mich ziemlich gut.
Die Lücken kennst Du nicht oder hast Du bloss nicht auch noch gegenwärtig genug, um sie zu besternen?
(Und „Jazz Samba Encore“ hat sich noch reinverirrt.)
