Zwar noch ein frisches Album, aber hier wurde es schon so ausführlich diskutiert, dass der ein oder andere es wohl schon Song für Song bewerten kann/will.
Im „aktuelle Alben“-Thread wurde es ja sehr kontrovers besprochen, wobei ich den Eindruck bekam, dass die Kritker des Albums offensichtlich wenig bereit waren, jedwede Veränderung im Belle and Sebastian-Kosmos, die man ja einfach konstatieren muss, mitzugehen/zu akzeptieren. Wir haben hier halt eine Band, die nicht um ihren Ursprung herum in engen Grenzen weiterwerkelt. Wobei mir ihre Frühwerke, vor allem „The boy with the arab strap“ sehr gefielen.
Ich stelle fest, dass hier die ganz großen, perfekten Songs fehlen, die auch „Dear catastrophe waitress“ noch hatte („I’m a cuckoo“, „Stay loose“) sich jedoch einige sehr gelungene finden lassen.
Eins noch bevor die Sterne kommen: nicht verstehen kann ich, dass ganz häufig Song 3 und 4 im Paket, jeweils je nach Fasson als gute oder schlechte Songs abgehandelt werden. Okay, der Bruch zum Pop der ersten zwei Songs ist erkennbar, aber „The blues are still blue“ hat eine viel größere Souveränität und auch den besseren Groove als „White collar boy“. Jetzt aber:

WerbungMir gefällt die neue, erhebliche Soundveränderung gut. Der „New Rock“ steht ihnen prima. Mir bereitet die Platte viel Freude.

ein paar tolle Songs, aber insgesamt überwiegt die Enttäuschung (Edit:wobei mir durchaus bewusst ist, dass ***1/2 Sterne gut sind, nur eben nicht für B&S-Standart)--
Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to exit the donut!Da ich ein Freund der etwas flotteren Gangart bin, sind m.E. „The Blues are still blue“ und „Funny little frog“ besonders hervorzuheben. Ersterer will mir gar nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Ich summe ihn schon seit Tagen vor mich hin. Der groovt einfach wie Sau. Da ist übrigens auch eine Menge „Let’s work together“ von Canned Heat drin, nicht nur Bolan.
Für die Besternung der anderen will ich mir noch etwas Zeit lassen. Nur soviel: für Blues gibt’s ***** und für Frog ****1/2--

Mornington crescent ***1/2Was an dem Album so schlecht sein soll werde ich wohl nicht mehr begreifen. Das liegt vermutlich aber auch daran, dass ich auch bisher eher nur ein Otto Normal Belle & Sebastian Hörer war.
Gerade die Melodie des viel gescholtenen Sukie hat sich ich von Anfang an bei mir eingebrannt und die flirrenden Gitarrensoli gefallen mir auch sehr, nicht nur bei Sukie.

Ich hatte auch schon dran gedacht, die CD zu zerschneiden und die schwächere zweite Hälfte wieder zu verkaufen, aber „Funny Little Frog“ wollte ich dann doch nicht missen…;-)

Was an dieser Argumentation dran sein soll, werde ich auch nicht mehr begreifen.
Auch durch mehrfaches Wiederholen wird sie jedenfalls nicht richtiger.--
