Irgendwo muss man mit sich hin. Der Musiker hat’s da nicht leichter als seine Hörer. Doch ein begnadeter Künstler weiß seine Hilflosigkeit zu ventilieren, im besten Falle zu sublimieren. Er erschafft ein Lied, das seiner Not mittels Melodie und Text Ausdruck verleiht. Der Hörer wiederum kann sich vom Song trösten und aufbauen lassen.
Eine win-win-Situation, wenn ein Lied, dessen Hörer und die besungene Problematik im richtigen Moment aufeinander treffen! Polly Jean Harvey griff zur Autoharp, denn sie benötigte ein Protest-geschultes Instrument – und schrieb die Songs für „Let England Shake“ (2011), ihr „State Of The Nation“-Album (Uncut, Januar 2012).
Auf ihrer zweiten Single aus „Let England Shake“, „The Glorious Land“, ertönen subsonisches Pulsieren und Jagdhörner, die Beklemmung und Bedrohung vermitteln. Denn Polly fragt sich, welche falschen (politischen und sozialen) Prioritäten eigentlich herrschen:
„How is our glorious country ploughed?/Not by iron ploughs!/
Our land is ploughed/By tanks and feet, feet marching.“
Oh, Amerika! Oh, England! Krieg über alles?
„How is our glorious country sown?/Not with wheat and corn!/

Oh, Amerika! Oh, England! Wohin führt ihr uns?
Für Polly steht fest – die Obrigkeit meint es nicht gut mit ihrem Fußvolk:
„What is the glorious fruit of our land?/
