ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS – Watching The Detectives [7″; Stiff Rec., 1977] * * * * *
Auf seiner Debüt-LP „My Aim Is True“ (1977) wurde Costello noch von der Pub-Rock-Band Clover unterstützt, die den sarkastischen, giftigen Lyrics des Angry Young Man leider hier und da den letzten Drive und Kick vorenthielt. Dann fand „unser Elvis“ (Wolfgang Doebeling) potenziell ebenbürtige Musiker – Auftritt: The Attractions.
Auf der vierten Costello-45 kam jedoch zunächst nur der The Attractions-Keyboarder, Steve Nieve, zum Zuge.
Elvis sitzt vor der Glotze. Neben ihm hockt ein bestimmt schnuckeliges Mädel:
„She looks so good/
That he goes down and begs“
Elvis wähnt sich selbstverständlich im Doppel-Krimi, dem „realen“ im Flimmerkasten, sowie dem „fiktiven“ auf dem Sofa, nebem dem Girl sitzend:
„She’s filing her nails/
While they’re dragging the lake“
Während die Film-Detektive sich schon den Verwandten des Opfers offenbaren…
„The detectives come to check/If you belong to the parents/
Who are ready to hear the worst/About their daughter’s disappearance“
…tappt unser Elvis weiter im Dunkeln:
„Though it nearly took/A miracle to get you to stay/
It only took my little fingers/To blow you away“
Die Abfuhr ist unmissverständlich: „Don’t get cute!!“
Folgerichtig ätzte und lästerte Costello auf der zweiten LP „This Years Model“ (1978) ausgiebig gegen das schwache Geschlecht.
