Meine Lieblingssingle aus 2007.
Ja, tatsächlich übertraf Candie Paynes dritte Single sogar die drei 2007er-Singles meiner damaligen Newcomer-Lieblinge, Lucky Soul. Der erste Grund dafür war simpel: Candies unwiderstehliche Vocals. Der zweite schon etwas weniger offenkundig: die Portishead-Bezüge.
„I Wish I Could Have Loved You More.“ schien in einem „Cowboys“-artverwandten Gewächshaus gezüchtet worden zu sein: die fiese, stechende Gitarre, die bedrohliche Atmosphäre, der dunkle, obsessive Vortrag. Anders als die Portishead-Single (1997) geriet das Backing jedoch Beat-lastiger. Und aufgrund des Piano/Percussion-Arrangements robuster und melodiöser, ja fast tanzbar.
Tja, falls man es über’s Herz bringt, zu diesen Liebeskummer-Lyrics das Tanzbein schwingen zu wollen:
„And ever since that day/I had to say goodbye/
How I long to change my mind/But I know it won’t be right.“
