Radiohead Optimistic About Sixth Album
Due to sunnier outlook, scary vampire bears to be traded in for logo-bellied pastel variety
Chris Leslie-Hynan reports:
Radiohead are set to release their best album ever according to, well, Radiohead. Both guitarist Ed O’Brien and drummer Phil Selway have gotten peppy in print recently about the band’s chemistry and studio prowess. As related by NME.com, O’Brien humbly claims that the atmosphere in the band is „fucking brilliant“ and that Radiohead may be hitting even more of a stride than in recent years. He commented: „You know that time when bands begin to swagger, like when the Stones got in a groove from ’68 to ’73? In the last two years, I think we’ve done that. To me, this record feels like the culmination of the best bits of The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A and Amnesiac.“

Echoing O’Brien, Phil Selway told Q: „I don’t think we’ve ever felt so self-assured in the studio. This time no shit hit the fan. And Thom’s voice has been incredible. That’s the standout element for me. He’s reminded us that he’s in a league of his own.“ Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell were unavailable for comment.

The album, which is still without a title, was recorded in only eight weeks, and is tenatively due sometime in mid-June. Though an earlier NME report had the band describing their sixth LP as „dark pop,“ according to Ed the new songs contain „space and sunshine and energy,“ to which many Radiohead fans no doubt responded: „What was that middle one? I’ve never heard of that.“

Preparing for the new album, the band has recently registered around 60 new song titles with Warner Chappell music publishing, according to XFM. The list of titles ranges from old songs that pre-date the group’s record deal (possibly registered as a response to last August’s unreleased demos controversy), to songs played live in 2002, to previously unknown songs. The new titles include:
