„Mingus Blues“, Track 8 auf CD1.
Man hat für die Doppel-CD soweit ich weiss das ganze Konzert wiederhergestellt, während für die LP aus Zeitgründen einiges weggelassen wurde. Die Legacy-Ausgabe von 1996, von der ich mir erst vor ein paar Jahren ein Second Hand-Exemplar zulegte, enthält die originalen Liner Notes von Mort Goode (ein DJ von damals, glaube ich) und dann einen Text von Sy Johnson, datiert auf August 1996. Dann folgt noch ein Text von Julie Lokin und Art Weiner, zwei der drei Veranstalter des Konzertes. Am Ende des Textes von Johnson gibt’s eine Notiz von Steve Berkowitz, Columbia Records A&R:
When reissue producer Bob Belden excavated all of the tapes from this concert, many previously unreleased performances were rediscovered. The decision to expand this release to 2 CDs was deemed appropriate so that the concert, as performed, could be heard again. As the tapes display on some selections, the orchestra may hve benefitted from a few more rehearsals, but the imperfection of the performance does not dull the music, energy, vibration and force that was/is Charles Mingus. „E.S.P.“ and „Jump Monk“, for example are dazzling! This new release is Mingus vérité at its finest. He was bigger than life, his genius and vision could push even this incredible orchestra beyond its limit.
