Auch bei jpc gesehen. Eine Vogue Box mit 20 CDs verschiedener Unterpreten. Die wurde hier irgendwann auch schon mal erwähnt. Und da ich mit der CPR Box ja gute Erfahrungen gemacht habe…..:lol:
Die Vogue-Box ist ein Schmuckstück! Sind zwar nur wenige Dinge drauf, die ich nicht schon hatte (etwas Sidney Bechet, ein paar Alternate Takes bei Konitz glaub ich?), aber ich habe sie mir dennoch geholt. Sony/Legacy’s Jazz on Disques Vogue: The Perfect Collection continues the Perfect Jazz Collection series, but unlike Perfect Jazz Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, which collected famous classic albums from Columbia, RCAVictor, Sony, and Epic, this new box set focuses solely on an obscure but highly influential label: the French Disques Vogue, a label that imported American Jazz artists (such as Thelonious Monk and Dizzy Gillespie) into France to record new records exclusive to the French market as well as discovering French Jazz talents (like Django Reinhardt and Martial Solal) in order to export them to the American market. While these albums may not be household names like Miles Davis‘ „Kind of Blue“ or Dave Brubeck’s „Time Out,“ they are fascinating jazz documents full of gorgeous compositions and virtuosic performances. Furthermore, this box stands as an archival document of an influential though oft forgotten period in jazz history. The material included may be too obscure to spark most casual fans to shell out the cash, but any lover of jazz will find plenty to enjoy here.
Most of the 35 albums presented here were originally released on vinyl as 10″ LPs and due to their abbreviated runtime, the compilers of this box were able to economically fit 35 albums (as well as two bonus EPs) onto only 20 discs. Each disc features a main album and is housed in a very sturdy mini-LP replica sleeve that features the artwork of that main album (so sturdy that the discs are very secure whereas discs in the other Perfect Jazz sets tended to slide out too easily). Many of the discs also feature one or more bonus albums, an occasional Bonus EP, and some even feature additional bonus tracks (primarily but not exclusively alternate takes). Below is a list of the 35 albums and 2 EPs included by disc and I have placed an asterisk (*) beside titles that include additional bonus tracks not issued on the original vinyl.

Vieles bzw. fast alles davon gab es in der älteren CD-Reihe „Original Vogue Masters“, die ich sehr schätze (und nahezu komplett da habe, war nicht ganz einfach und auch nicht billig). Die Box bietet eine sehr gute Auswahl und einige absolute Highlights wie das beste Solo-Album von Monk und Barney Wilens Debut-Album (auf dem der Junge sich auch tatsächlich über Stücke von Monk hermacht und das auch gebacken kriegt! Wenn „precocious“ irgendwo passt, dann hier!). Daneben sind auch etwas weniger zwingende Dinge drin (Lalo Schifrin), ein paar liebenswerte Kuriositäten (Hodeir) … anderswo (Solal, Brown, Jaspar) würde mir diese Auswahl nicht reichen, aber da die CDs der älteren Reihe nicht mehr so leicht zu finden sind, ist die Box natürlich eine sehr feine Sache!
@nail: keine Sideman-Sessions – schliesst das auch die Aufnahmen mit Hawkins, Dickie Wells etc. aus? Das wäre nämlich ein herber Verlust! Ansonsten klar, die frühen Frémeaux-Volumen enthalten tatsächlich ein paar weniger tolle Vocals, manches ist ganz hübsch, chanson-artig (mag ich ja), aber es gibt auch quäkige Cabaret-Sängerinnen und sowas …
