Curmudgeon:
Like all Ferry albums the wait has been long and, disappointingly in this instance, it’s not been worth it. Given the calibre of collaborators, including all original members of Roxy Music, the result is rarely anything more than mediocre. Yes, it sounds superb, but it’s also overproduced and the melodies simply don’t warrant the fuss. And for the very first time (for me), I’m embarassed by a Ferry song, the execrably dated BF Bass; it sounds like unintended self-parody. The relative brevity of the album makes it an easy single listen, but it never coheres. With only 10 tracks, Ferry should have hit this out of the park; instead, he’s assembled a competent album whose outcome sounds exactly like its process.
