In late March [1946], Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conductor Otto Klemperer was sufficiently curious about the new music to give it an audicnce. He accompanied two purported jazz fans, on the promise of hearing [Charlie] Parker with the [Howard] McGhee Sextet at the Casa Blanca at San Pedro and 28th. On the way to the club, Klemperer was instead mugged by the duo and missed the band.
