The quality of the many Coltrane recordings in mid-1955 to mid.1957 varies widely, with a fumbled solo for every valuable one. His style was unsettled as late as May 1957; in „From this Moment on“ he plays like Gene Ammons, and in „Straight Street“ he imitates Hank Mobley. (The younger, more rhythmically sophisticated Mobley often recorded tenor chases with Coltrane; perhaps „Straight Street“ was done to show that Coltrane, too, could play in a rhythmically versatile style if he chose.)
