Cal Massey wrote Symphony for Allah, an avant garde composition which was used in a documentary filmed by the Algerian government with accompanists Archie Shepp and Don Byas . . .
„Black Is“ was the title of a showcase production of poetry, music and fashions by Elaine Baskin-Bey, put together by young entrepreneur Spark Martin, 26, with the assistance of Cal Massey, to help pay for remedial reading for Harlem youngsters. Black Sounds were provided by Thelonious Monk, who’s leaving for a tour of Japan; Freddie Hubbard, who’s Black Clay is becoming a smash hit and who’s on the way to Europe, and McCoy Tyner and his quintet. The real star of the evening was Massey’s 14-year-old son, Zane, who stunned the audience with some impressive tenor sax playing, including some compositions of his own, and walked away being hailed as the heir apparent to John Coltrane . . .
Cal Massey, Gary Bird of WWRL, Sonia Sanchez, The Universal Messengers are only a few of the talented Blacks donating their time to a concert to benefit Leonard Rogers (Yehouse Ariel Ben Israel) who’s fighting a legal battle with the U.S. Army over religious beliefs . . .
