Although most of his recordings were aimed at the pop market, Earl was an extraordinary musician who must be considered as one of the great swing alto players. He was a powerful musician blowing with a fiery temperament. This dynamic playing was even accentuated in the recording studios where slight echo was added behind the solo work. However this technique used to commercialize his records was not really necessary because Earl had a tremendous swing and put a lyrical beauty in his work, that resulted in ravishing phrases full of strength and beauty. He could make his alto sing like no one else ever did and one doesn’t get tired of listening to his recordings. Aside of his King recordings there are also many other proofs of his great talent recorded as a sideman.
