Neue Literatur für die In Crowd:

Hype & Sou! is finally ready

AL ABRAMS was Motown’s first employee, begging a job from Berry Gordy in 1959 before the label was even launched. After working as a road manager, and then helping run the Jobete publishing operation, he became Hitsville’s iconic Director of Publicity and became the ultimate Motown Messenger through 1966.

His book „Hype & Sou! – Behind The Scenes At Motown“ tells it like it was. The stories are so vivid and raw you can almost taste the cordite. It’s about a small record label becoming the ultimate hit factory. It’s about a black company coming of age to the background turmoil of The Civil Rights Movement. It’s about the genius of Gordy and the impossibly talented team he surrounded himself with. It’s about the birth of Soul Music.

Al writes just as wonderfully now as when he was dubbed „The Fourth Supreme“ as the No. 1 hits kept on rolling, and lifts the lid on what really went on at 2648 W.Grand Boulevard. Despite being young and headline seeking pushy, he slowed down enough to keep every memo he sent, collect (now historical) label documents, retain his press releases and newspaper clippings, and amass a jaw dropping collection of photographs, many never seen before. Sorting through this archive took so long the proposed delivery date for the book kept being pushed back. The delays were worthwhile! A series of evocative essays are surrounded with a dazzling selection of graphic images.

Believe the Hype! If you love Soul music you will cherish this book…
The book is a limited edition luxury 288 pages full colour hardback wrapped in a classy dust jacket. It will be officially published in September, but if copies are ready before then, they will be despatched to on-line purchasers before it goes on release anywhere else.

The first 500 copies of the book come complete with a souvenir seven inch single, a replica of the historic 1964 „Hitsville U.S.A. Greetings To Tamla Motown Appreciation Society“ promotional disc manufactured by Motown in the USA and sent to Brit soul guru Dave Godin to send out to members of the UK British Tamla Motown Appreciation Society. It has been officially licenced from Universal Music Group and is pressed in red vinyl. The records are in stock now and will be sent out to all customers as soon as orders are received. The books will then be sent separately.
