According to the BPI, the record industry’s governing body, to qualify as a single a record could not contain more than four tracks and to qualify as an album it must retail above a minimum of 2,49 GBP. With its six tracks and retailing at, as the cover said, „two pounds only u skinny rats“, Slates as a format effectively did not exist and would not appear in the official charts. It did, however, appear in Record Businness’s independent singles chart, reaching number three, a creditable position considering it was competing with records half its price.
