NEW YORK MINING DISASTER 1941
Words by Robin & Barry Gibb
This song was inspired by the tragic Aberfan disaster of 1966, in which the children of a school in this Welsh town were killed by a huge landslide. As it was so soon after the incident, the Bee Gees disguised it as a fictitious disaster, so that nobody would be unduly distressed by the song. It was their first British single, released in January 1968. Many people mistook them for the Beatles, who had greatly influenced them in their songwriting and singing styles since their tour of Australia.
