Kurz ein paar direkt nach dem Konzert verfasste Eindrücke meinerseits vom Berlin-Konzert, vom org-Board kopiert…:
A few more words on the awesome Berlin gig..
They needed some time to get going, during the first few songs neither audience nor band seemed to be really going for the ride. But then somewhere around „Bartering Lines“/“To Be Young“, which were the best live performances I´ve ever heard of those two songs, they actually started to connect… Ryan was getting in increasingly better spirits, I have in fact never seen him this frisky and at the same time relaxed at a show before. While „Party Clown“ seems to be the equivalent to the 2002 tour`s „I Don´t Wanna Work“ (ok, well, with an actual melody), last night´s equivalent to 2002´s favorite senseless repetitions („Everything´s kinda weeiiird“ and „What time is it??!“) were „and now another musical selection from The Cardinals“ and an uncountable number of „thank you so much“s. Ryan´s spirited playing and jolly mood was visibly spreading to both band and audience. Everybody was obviously enjoying themselves. The „cardinalized“ versions of „NYNY“ and „Dear Chicago“ are growing on me, the latter finally uncovering its beauty and charme to me through Ryan´s beautiful vocal performance yesterday. The whole Berlin set was overall distinctly more mellow and slow compared to the rather heavy Hamburg show, which put more amphasis on Ryan´s and Neal´s vocals – who, together, were more face-melting than ever! Neal´s „Willow Jane“ was another highlight, with Neal and Ryan sharing the lead vocals, „Tennessee Sucks“ a nice suprise, and „Blue Hotel“ feels like an absolute classic already…
But the two by far most memorable moments of the night were the absolute mind-blowing „Meadowlake Street“, with what must have been the most beautiful Ryan vocals I have ever heard, and „I See Monsters“ – starting off really quietly, building up and then emptying into the most forceful and urgent of this very unique Cardinals sound imaginable…
A perfect, orgasmic end to an overall mind-blowing show!
