Chris DeVito hat für diesen Reader alle bekannten Interviews mit John Coltrane zusammengetragen, auch neue Transkriptionen und Übersetzungen ins Englische besorgt. Einer der Höhepunkte ist ein langes Interview, das Coltrane im Herbst 1962 in Paris gab und das 1963 in „Les Cahiers Du Jazz“ veröffentlicht wurde. Darin spricht er über Eric Dolphy („the only soloist who gave me total satisfaction“), über den Zeitfakto („my ideas have to develop naturally in one long solo“), über seine schwarze Band („I don´t know any criteria that can differentiate a white musician from a black one“) und seine Botschaft: „We´re really not trying to provoke a state of hypnosis or anything else like that; we just want to reach the audience, to communicate with them, to make them feel what we do.“ „Coltrane On Coltrane.
