Television Ponder Studio Return, Reissue Classic Albums with Bonus Tracks
Television– the original minimalist guitar rock band (and most routinely name-dropped influence to all things New York art-rock) is apparently talking about getting back into the studio. Although they’ve been touring together in their original form since 2001, their last recorded material appeared in 1992 (the self-titled Television for Capitol). In a recent interview with Billboard guitarist Richard Lloyd remarked: „We have quite a few new songs which get performed live, and we also talk about recording from time to time.“ He goes on in a rather vague manner, stating that the band don’t exactly have record-company funding, but may record anyway… on their own time.
In the meantime, we can expect several reissues from the seminal proto-punk band this fall. Most notably, Rhino Records is repackaging the group’s twin late ’70s classics Marquee Moon and Adventure with the requisite additional artwork, new liner notes, lyrics, and unreleased bonus tracks. Among the goodies are alternate versions of „Marquee Moon,“ „Friction,“ and „See No Evil,“ the never-released title track to Adventure, a remix and alternate instrumental version of „Ain’t That Nothin‘,“ ultra-rare early single „Little Johnny Jewel“ and an early version of „Glory.“ Both reissues are due September 23rd.
Also premiering on the 23rd is Live at the Old Waldorf, a live gig recorded June 29th, 1978– only a few months before the band’s initial breakup. This recording is being made available by Rhino Handmade, and will only be offered online. The tracklist could not be verified by Rhino Handmade at the time of this writing, but will likely mirror various bootlegs of the show:
01 Glory
02 Venus De Milo
03 Foxhole
04 Careful
05 Ain’t that Nothin‘
06 Friction
07 Marquee Moon
08 Satisfaction
09 Little Johnny Jewel
You might also have noticed that a reissue of Television frontman Tom Verlaine’s 1987 solo effort Flashlight hit the bins on the Collector’s Choice label this week, also with spiffy lyrics and liner notes.
