Habe grad zum erste Mal seit ca. 15 Jahren Star People gehört (endlich vor ein paar Tagen die LP gekauft… nebst ein paar Japan-only-Alben das einzige reguläre Miles-Album, das ich nicht auf CD oder als Teil einer CD-Box habe, warum auch immer…)
Verdammt gut! Möglicherweise das beste der Alben von Miles‘ Zeit nach dem Comeback! Sein Spiel erinnert an die besten Tage, ist sensibel, lyrisch, „poised“… die Band mit Bill Evans, Marcus Miller, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Al Foster, Mino Cinelu (und auf einem oder zwei Stücken Tom Barney an Millers Stelle) ist hervorragend – auf dem nächsten Album hatte Miles eine neue Band, die zumindest im Studio nie ähnlich gut war wie diese erste Post-Comeback-Band (Scofield und Barney waren die einzigen Neuzugänge, die anderen waren 1983 schon ein paar Jahre dabei).
Gil Evans war im Studio anwesend – Miles‘ Kommentar gemäss Leonard Feathers Liner Notes:
One of the most important things is tempo. If you’re playing for a live audience you can always tell where it should be, by their reaction; but in a studio it’s hard to get it exactly right. So when I wanted to know was it too fast, too slow, too loud, too soft, was it phrased right, did it fit right, I’d ask Gil.
