Ich wollte kurz etwas zu der „white opinion“ Anekdote einwerfen. Diese wird in der Carr-Biographie wie folgt geschildert (es geht um Bill Evans):
…Also he was the only white man in the group and Miles would tease him about that. Jimmy Cobb said:
They were close, but Miles used to bug him, you know. He would just fool with him. It was good-hearted… Like we’d be talking and Bill would say something and Miles would tell him, „Man, cool it. We don’t want no white opinions.“ That kind of shook him because he didn’t know how to take that, and Miles would be giggling behind him… and piano players, when they first got with the band they were always confuses because he would tell them when to play and when not to play, so they got so they wouldn’t know when to play.
Dies kann man natürlich als Indiz für „Rassismus“ deuten. Zwingend ist das aber nicht. Für mich besagt diese Anekdote lediglich, daß Rassismus damals ein Thema war (wie könnte es auch anders sein) und möglicherweise, daß Miles für sensible Gemüter kein umgänglicher Mensch war.
