In December 2004, the southwest-inspired Calexico and indie rock’s beard-folk mascot, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), collaborated on seven tracks slated for a new EP. Entitled Lays in the Reigns, the group effort is projected for sometime in the Fall 2005 via Overcoat Recordings. The sessions took place at Wavelab Studios in Tucson, Ariz., Calexico’s desert birthplace. Salvador Duran supplied guest, Spanish-language vocals on the EP’s re-imagined title track, and other contributers include Wavelab Studios‘ Nick Luca and Craig Schumacher, who added a reverse delayed wurlitzer to the mix and blues harp to the swamp rock track „Red Dirt“ and the honky-tonkin‘ „History Of Lovers“, respectively. A promotional tour is expected to take place this fall.
