Hier gibt’s einen Podcast mit einem Interview, das aus Anlass seines 88. Geburtstages geführt wurde…Und etwa in der Hälfte erzählt er eine seltsame Geschichte, dass John Graas (er sagt Gross, ist das ein anderer Hornist?) bei der ersten Probe des Chico Hamilton Quintet mit Collette, Hall, Katz und Smith (das 1955 oder ’56 entstand) an einer Herzattacke gestorben sei… Graas starb aber erst 1962 (und war nicht 37, denn anscheinend ist er schon 1917 geboren, siehe wiki).
Seltsame Geschichte… könnte auch sein, dass er „Groves“ oder sowas sagt, aber Graas hat 1953 mit Mulligan gespielt, würde schön passen. Aber er ist eben nicht 1955/56 gestorben, als Hamilton sein Quintett zusammenstellte, sondern erst 1962.
Vermutlich hat er die Geschichte – die bei nach ca. 21:15 im Podcast auch zu hören ist – etwas zu schön ausgeschmückt, denn im JazzWax Interview (3. Teil) ist sie etwas anders:
JW: In 1955, after a series of albums with singers that year, you formed your first famous quintet.
CH: Yeah, we had Buddy Collette on reeds, Fred Katz on cello, Jim Hall on guitar, Carson Smith on bass and me on drums. Originally the cello was supposed to be a French horn. But the guy I wanted, John Graas, wasn’t available. About a week later, I was doing a thing with Fred Katz. We had played together with Lena. I told him about my plight. He said why not a cello? I said sure, OK, bring it over. Why not? [laughs].
