Doug, zwei Aspekte sind hier wichtig.
Du musst [1] sicherstellen, daß der Laptop das Videosignal auf dem HDMI Ausgang auch ausgibt, was er standardmäßig NICHT tut. Erst dann hat [2] der Beamer/Großbildschirm eine Chance, das automatisch zu erkennen oder sich manuell darauf umschalten zu lassen.
[1] erreichst Du i.d.R. über eine bestimmte Funktionstastenkombination auf dem Laptop. Die gibt dann sowas aus und Du kannst die Ausgabeoptionen auswählen:

Wenn Du das schon gemacht hast, weiß ich auch nicht, wo das Problem ist. HDMI_out auf SVGA_in sollte keine Probleme machen. Adapter gibt´s ab 10€ (achte aber auf „Full HD„, alles andere ist rausgeschmissenes Geld).
[2] ist vom Beamer/Bildschirm abhängig.
