that dreaded brown recluse record was a solo record in name only because the record company was complaining i was making too many giant sand records too close together.
so it was called a solo record instead. sort of a loop hole. spirit lie. i miss that song. you can hear young indiosa in that one singing the chorus a bit. where does your spirit lie ? it had some live takes on it from mad dog studio too, like the song ‚picture shows‘, which was really written in the 70s, but coming unto its own here at the turn of the 90s. i like the speed of how that track got played and how it showed off how tight the band could be. i hated the sound of the acoustic guitar pick up making the strings sound like rubber bands. it was recorded during a moment when atlantic records were there in the studio and considering us for a signing. i don’t think we ended up on atlantic, but a single called ’shadow to you‘ did. anyhow, there was no so called solo record till 1997 because i made it a point to include the band in everything i would do for the sake of their income and involvement. it wasn’t until things changed in 1996 when 2/3 of that line up went off to explore other ideas that i was left with having nothing but a solo record to record. all that coincided with rainer getting very ill and also me having to raise up my daughter alone then. these choices left me without a band. so solo it would be, but looking back, i should have just gone ahead and started the solo yip many years earlier. it would have made more sense in the outcome of things. the end. again. -howe
