Godard’s Surprise Win Is a Victory for Independent Cinema:
Chief BrodyOn Saturday, the National Society of Film Critics, of which I’m a member, bestowed the award for Best Picture of 2014 upon Jean-Luc Godard’s „Goodbye to Language“, and all hell broke loose. Or, rather, the news prompted a spurt of indignant invective online that has the incidental virtue of proving that the eighty-four-year-old Godard’s exceptional artistry remains as radical, provocative, and therefore divisive as ever.
