Claude Thornhill And His Orchestra Play The Great Jazz Arrangements Of Gerry Mulligan And Ralph Aldrich
Claude Thornhill loved confusion. It seemed to be his only remaining pleasure. He never called out the number or the name of the next arrangement. Each started with a piano introduction and we had to recognize it. He tried tricking us with oriental, Flamenco, or atonal disguises. He could be pretty clever about it. We would wait for Squirms, the lead trumpet player who had been with Claude so long he could hear through him, to shout Lover Man or Witchcraft, and then we scrambled to pull out the chart.
Claude adored the confusion of setting up. Combination French horn player and bandboy, Nooch, would be unpacking while musicians ran scales and stagehands fussed. Once Claude grabbed a microphone, announced „Testing testing one-two-three,“ and then, looking revolted by the results, began shouting firm and unintelligible instructions to nobody in particular.
kann man späte Aufnahmen von Thornhill hören, ohne kurz bei Mike Zwerin nachzulesen? Wohl kaum, zumal wenn man das Foto sieht… die Band hier ist ein bisschen früher, aber feste Grössen wie der Leadtrompeter Squirms (Dale Pearce) oder Nooch (Albert Antonucci) sind auch hier dabei, es gibt auch ganz gute Solisten wie die beiden Trompeter und Gene Quill am Alt… das Konzept ist auch eigentlich ziemlich logisch, die Thornhill Band holt sich die Innovationen von Birth of the Cool, die teilweise ja bei ihr abgeschaut waren, noch einmal zurück… that said: Elliott Lawrence hatte zu der Zeit wohl eine bessere Band mit ähnlichem Konzept, aber anhören kann man sich das hier auf jeden Fall
