The Monty Alexander Trio – Montreux Alexander: Live! At The Montreux Festival | Nach einer Woche im Ronnie Scott’s in London reiste das Trio mit John Clayton und Jeff Hamilton an den Genfersee. „We were firing on all cylinders; there was a special chemistry and cohesiveness that we shared – it was a special sound we had. I felt that my every musical statement on the piano was lovingly caressed by JC’s bass and „Hammer“ Hamilton would add his sizzling groove“ – so erinnert sich Alexander für die 30th Anniversary Edition von 2007, die 20 Minuten mehr vom Konzert enthält, das am 10. Juli 1976 stattfand. Für MPS produziert hat Willi Fruth, man nutzte die in Montreux zur Verfügung stehende Ausrüstung (aka Mountain Recording Studios – Claude Nobs war ja ein Technik-Fanatiker und hatte immer das Neuste und Beste da), und das ist nicht nur musikalisch phantastisch sondern klingt auch so. Wirklich ein besonderes Dokument. Ahmad Jamals „Night Mist Blues“ setzt den Groove, Alexander irgendwo zwischen Funk und Peterson, manchmal recht nah an Gene Harris, dünkt mich. „Feelings“ (siehe Barbara Carroll oben) und „Satin Doll“ folgen auf der A-Seite, die B-Seite öffnet mit Nat Adderleys „Work Song“ und das Trio ist in the pocket, tief im Two-Beat-Groove, aus dem sich ein dreizehnminütiges Drama entfaltet – und nahtlos geht es weiter mit „I’ll Drown in My Own Tears“ von Henry Glover und danach Alexanders eigenem Arrangement der „Battle Hymn of the Republic“. Als Bonustracks gibt es Richard Evans‘ „Montevideo“, Thom Bell/Linda Creeds „You Make Me Feel Brand New“, nochmal episch mit fast elf Minuten, und zum Abschluss das einzige Original, „That’s the Way It Is“ von Alexander.
