Howard Riley – The Day Will Come | Auch in England gab es 1970 bei Columbia einstündige Platten … ich habe wohl auch noch irgendwo „Angles“, den Vorgänger von Howard Riley und sein Debut bei CBS 1969, aber es läuft jetzt noch „The Day Will Come“, mit Barry Guy und Alan Jackson. Das Trio öffnet mit Stücken in einer nachdenklichen Stimmung … und ist darin von Peacocks Album nicht so weit entfernt, auch wenn die Musik wie mich dünkt anders funktioniert, eher kleine Motive als Grundlage hat als offene Akkorde oder Skalen. Das Material haben je zur Hälfe Riley und Peacock beigesteuert. Es gibt Minimalistisches, geräuschhaft Freies, Anklänge an Monk, auch freie Balladen und zum Ende mit dem Titelstück sogar eine Art Groove-Hymne.
Fürs CD-Reissue von 1999 hat Riley ein paar Zeilen des Rückblickes beigesteuert – davon der grössere Teil:
Most importantly, it was a working and therefore evolving band. The music evolved through playing gigs rather than being a one-off studio project, and I think the record reflects that. Secondly, I was aware of other piano trios up to and including that period, and remember feeling that it was essential to arrive at a distinctive group sound. Which leads into the third point – the second half of the 1960s saw the beginning of a distinctive European approach to jazz and improvised music. In Britain an amazing number of figures who later became internationally renowned were just starting out. It was an exciting innovative time.
The music on The Day Will Come used compositions by Barry and myself to provide a general springboard for improvising. Also, the writing tended to suggest challenging areas to improvise in, and it wasn’t always easy to play – we rehearsed. Because it was a working Trio the music changed from month to month, as is confirmed by the other CBS recording by this Trio (Angle from 1968/69, also now available on CD).
