Bill Evans Trio – Trio ’65 | Hornbrille, Wollpullover, nuancierte Akkorde, ein melodischer Bass, der „percussion angel“ mit seinen nervös tänzelnden Besen. Das alles ist jetzt eine Marke und Evans hat am 3. Februar 1965, kurz bevor das Trio wieder mal zur Europa-Tour aufbricht, keine Lust auf neues Material. Stattdessen „Israel“ und „Elsa“ von Earl Zindars zum Auftakt, dann „‚Round Midnight“, „Love Is Here to Stay“, „How My Heart Sings“ (wieder Zindars), das einzige neue Stück „Who Can I Turn To?“ und nochmal zwei Klassiker, „Come Rain or Come Shine“ und „If You Could See Me Now“ – praktisch alles schon für Riverside eingespielt also.
John S. Wilson war nicht amüsiert, gab dem Album in Downbeat gerade mal drei Sterne und schrieb: „The more I hear of Evans, the more I become convinced that the propagation of the Evans mystique must be one of the major con jobs of recent years“. Das zog natürlich zahlreiche Zuschriften nach sich und eine davon ist in den Session-Kommentaren der Verve-Box von Phil Bailey nebst dem Wilson-Zitat ebenfalls abgedruckt, ein Charles C. Sords aus Pittsburgh hat sie eingeschickt: „Let me convey my congratulations to John S. Wilson who, with one stroke of his typewriter, has established himself as the most knowledgeable critic in jazz with his discovery of the great Bill Evans hoax. In one brief review, Wilson has exposed the large group of musicians and critics who think that Evans is a pianist of great originality, subtlety, and taste, as a bunch of tin-eared idiots.“
Das Trio musiziert auch hier auf höchstem Niveau und ich höre das echt gerne an – aber wie gesagt: die Formel ist etabliert, richtig neue Impulse gibt es zu dem Zeitpunkt nicht.
