Sasha Berliner hab ich übrigens gerade erst als Gast auf dem Jaleel Shaw-Album zum ersten Mal bewusst gehört – war sie hier schon mal Thema? Falls, hab ich das verpasst …
Und Allen Smith hab ich dann gestern noch etwas nachgeguckt, der war in den frühen Fünfzigern bei Gerald Wilson, mit der Band von Benny Carter oder Duke Ellington (mit dem auch in den Sechzigern nochmal spielte und aufgenommen wurde, auf Vol. 8 der Private Collection taucht er auch nochmal auf), ist auf Aufnahmen mit Flip Phillips (Clef/Norgran, 1953) und in einer der Bands bei „Great Jazz Standards“ von Gil Evans dabei. Generell war er wohl Session-Musiker mit vielen Gigs auch in Clubs – da kommt was zusammen, und es ist toll, ihn auf dem Tjader-Album mal so richtig hören zu können.
He arrived in San Francisco in 1946 after playing with the U.S. Navy Band in Honolulu during World War II, and attended San Francisco State University on the GI Bill. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music alongside classmates Paul Desmond and Cal Tjader. He later obtained a master’s in education.
Mr. Smith was a mainstay at the fabled Fillmore after-hours club, Jimbo’s Bop City. Along with venerable jazz bassist Vernon Alley, drummer Earl Watkins and others, Mr. Smith helped end segregation in San Francisco nightclubs in the late ’40s. He was one of the primary players at the short-lived Blanco’s Cotton Club on O’Farrell Street, the city’s first desegregated club in the elegant 1907 theater now called the Great American Music Hall.
„Opening a club with all-black entertaining and help, where anybody could come? That was quite radical at the time,“ Mr. Smith recalled in 1998.
In 1958, he took a sabbatical from his elementary school teaching job and moved to New York. He turned down an offer to join Basie and decided instead to tour with Benny Goodman. He returned to San Francisco and for many years taught in Hunters Point until becoming the principal of Junipero Serra School in San Francisco.
