The Rosetta Stone of modern jazz: a monumental document written in five subtly and sometimes starkly different dialects but within much of the music of the post-bop period has been defined and demarcated. When future histories of the music are written these sessions will be adduced as a turning point. Arguably Miles’s best ever group working its way out of one phase and into another in which time and harmony, melody and dynamics were radically rethought. The improvisations here would have been inconceivable a mere couple of years earlier; they don’t so much float on the chords as react against them like phosphorus (Penguin Guide).
Oder auf persönlicher Ebene: Als es darum ging, ein Geburtstagsgeschenk für einen guten Freund und Jazzliebhaber zu kaufen, habe ich damals, als die Box in meiner Erinnerung 150 Mark kostete, alle zusammengetrommelt und sie dazu gebracht, ihm diese Box zu schenken. Er hat sie noch immer, ich weiß nicht ganz genau, wie sehr er sie schätzt, aber vielleicht äußert er sich ja noch.
Ich finde toll, dass die Sessions erscheinen, zu viele Leute sind zu kurz gekommen damals, und die Box war knapp 25 Jahre oop.
