Coltrane produced his most attractive album last year—Giant Steps. It was a mature and intense statement. Coltrane Jazz is not the album Giant Steps was, either in artistry or intensity. Still, it’s an exciting record, one that at the same time is similar to, yet different from, the first of the Atlantic albums.

Taken together, these four albums comprise one of the unmistakable pinnacles of modern jazz on record. […] That Coltrane has altered his style somewhat since recording these selections does not alter their value in the least.
die Beobachtung über diese Gruppe von Alben macht für mich viel Sinn, das ist über die Jahre natürlich durch diverse andere Prestige Veröffentlichungen alles ein bisschen diffuser geworden… aber damals gab es einfach diese drei Alben… und dann Lush Life… und dann Settin the Pace… und so weiter… `
Soultrane bekam am 11. Dezember 1958 ***** von Dom Cerulli, genau wie „Traneing in“ am 12. Juni 1958… beides keine besonders tiefsinnigen Rezensionen, aber sehr enthusiastisch… Blue Train find ich irgendwie nicht… am 23. Januar 1958 hatte Don Gold das Debutalbum Coltrane noch ziemlich verrissen („Although Coltrane plays with a good deal of authority, I do not feel that his work on this specific LP is excitingly impressive, but listeners who dig blowing sessions and tenor men of the hard charging school may find value in this set.“, ***)
