redbeansandricegestern hab ich zufällig hier ein tolles Dave Burrell Interview mit Clifford Allen von 2004 gelesen… dass er zum Beispiel als einer der ersten durch diese Berklee School Sache gelaufen ist… (war das Real Book aus der Burton Generation? ne, wahrscheinlich etwas später…)
so I went to Berklee. [When I got there] Quincy Jones was graduating, and I was much inspired by hearing his charts being played down in the basement. I was also impressed by Gary Burton and the way he and the upperclassmen were studying the music. In the dormitories it was pretty evident who was really serious about the music; Gary and his crowd were seniors, and they were bolder than we were – I was just getting started with Sonny Sharrock, Ted Daniel, and those people. I immediately saw that it had to be all or nothing at all; you couldn’t just practice sometimes. I had to really study very, very hard and that’s how I got the bug.
Danke, gucke ich noch rein … „upperclassmen“ – haha, passt vermutlich genau. Wann das genau los ging mit dem Real Book und so weiss ich nicht, hätte gedacht in den frühen Siebzigern oder so? Aber Burton war da schon massgeblich involviert, soweit ich weiss.
Ach ja, das steht im Wiki-Artikel (und bezieht sich nur auf das „Real Book“, das wir kennen, da wird auch erwähnt, dass es ähnliches wenigstens seit den Zwanzigerjahren gab):
Pat Metheny claims that while teaching at Berklee College of Music from 1973 to 1974, one of his guitar students and one of Gary Burton’s vibraphone students (both of whom wish to remain anonymous) invented the idea of assembling the anthology that would form The Real Book. Early editions included several compositions by Metheny as „Untitled Tune“ as they had not yet been recorded and released.

Amina Claudine Myers – Song For Mother E im Stream, Myers an Piano und Orgel, nur begleitet von Pheeroan Aklaff, kannte ich nicht und gefällt mir sehr, auf jeden Fall schonmal mehr als das Bessie Smith Album… viel hat Myers ja über die Jahre nicht aufnehmen können, toll dass da jetzt nochmal was kommt…
Das mit dem neuen Album im Stream war wohl wirklich ein Fehler, es gibt jetzt nur noch den Opener:
