@zoji, und wen es sonst noch interessiert…
Ja, wir hatte öfter telefonischen Kontakt, ich weiss noch, als Jody ganz stolz von einem großen Ereignis, zu dem er eingeladen war, berichtete, „Howlin‘ For Hubert, Celebrating The Musical Legacy Of Hubert Sumlin“. Das muss 2012 gewesen sein. Dem großartigen Hubert Sumlin wurde mit dieser Veranstaltung eine posthume Ehrung zuteil. Nach Willie Johnson und Jody war Hubert der dritte Gitarrist, der bei Howlin‘ Wolf maßgeblich mitspielte. Klar, dass Jody da nicht fehlen durfte, und so spielte er einige Songs mit anderen Berühmtheiten zusammen. Auch Eric Clapton wurde die Ehre zuteil, mit Jody zusammen spielen zu dürfen (ja, ich sehe es so herum, nicht anders). Jody hat wohl viel Spaß gehabt und war seiner Aussage zufolge sehr berührt, als es plötzlich „Standing Ovations“ für IHN gab. Die hatte er sich redlich verdient! In einer seiner E-Mails berichtete er mir dann zu dem Konzert, Originaltext:
„I’m not very busy at this time, but I have played some pretty nice gigs. One in particular that I think you would have enjoyed, was the concert February 24th in New York City, with „Eric Clapton“, Keith Richards, Buddy Guy, Shemekia Copeland, Elvis Costello, Stevie Ray Vaughans brother Jimmy Vaughan, I have played a festival with him a few years ago, Susan Tedeschi and her husband, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and a couple more whose names I can’t remember at the moment, and a very good time was had by all…..
I was onstage four times. I played on songs that I played on the original recordings. I played with Eric Clapton on two songs that I had recorded with The Howlin‘ Wolf which was „Forty Four“ and I think the other may have been „Spoonful“. I played Bo Diddleys „Who Do You Love“ with a guy that played the pedal steel guitar, whose name I can’t think of right now….. (Anm.: Jody meint Robert Randolph)
Then I played „Lucky Lou“ with Kenny Wayne Shepherd. I let him play a solo after I played the sliding part for him. He is a very good guitarist, but I didn’t have the time to teach him that sliding part, so I played it for him. You can see this all on „You Tube“. I don’t recall if I played a solo on the original of „Forty Four“ with „The Wolf“ but I had to think fast and I played one with Eric Clapton.
